A 20-minute walk across Vauxhall Bridge brings you to Tate Britain, where you can see some of the world's greatest paintings free of charge. If you're treating a loved one who's an art fan, you can book a "tour for two", while kids can find plenty of child-friendly things to do. Another 15 minutes' walk along Millbank brings you to the Palace of Westminster, home to the Houses of Parliament.

A flight on the London Eye, less than two miles from the hotel, is unforgettable on a clear day, when views stretch for miles, or at night, when the city lights up like a Christmas tree. For an even better view, head to the two viewing platforms of The Shard, near London Bridge. The indoor gallery is on level 69, but thrill-seekers head for the partially outdoor gallery on level 72.

Arm yourself with a picnic, cool drinks and a sun hat and head to The Oval, 15 minutes' walk from the hotel, to watch county cricket or an international Test match. Prefer football? The hotel is just four miles from Chelsea matches at Stamford Bridge, or you can cheer on Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium, less than 40 minutes away by foot and Tube.

For a super-affordable "see the sights" bus ride, hop on the number 88 outside the hotel. This northbound route winds its way over Vauxhall Bridge before taking in such world-famous spots as Big Ben, the Palace of Westminster, Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly Circus and Regent's Park, which is handy for London Zoo. End your journey with tasty street food from Camden Town's sprawling market.
