Set in a red-brick Victorian building in the town centre, the Museum of Wigan Life houses thousands of artefacts tracing local history and culture. A visit uncovers anything from Roman pottery to WWI relics in fascinating industrial, natural and social-history collections. Upstairs is the former town library, where author George Orwell researched his landmark 1937 novel “The Road to Wigan Pier”.
Haigh Woodland Park is 20 minutes’ drive from the hotel and makes a great day of family entertainment. With 40 miles of scenic walkways, you might be lucky enough to spot woodpeckers, roe deer and Saddleback pigs along the paths. As well as adventure golf and a high ropes circuit, the park has two miniature railways to take the weight off tired feet plus a café, brewery and a popular chocolatier.
In the town centre less than 2 miles from the hotel, a series of locks on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal lead to Wigan Pier, where trucks once loaded coal onto horse-drawn barges. Discover the area’s industrial legacy on a canal cruise, or with a stroll along the towpath to the Trencherfield Museum, set in an old spinning mill. Several former warehouses on the way have been reborn as inviting pubs.
It’s easy to reach the great northern cities of Liverpool and Manchester, both only 45 minutes’ drive from the hotel. At Liverpool’s Albert Dock you’ll find restaurants, bars and museums as well as the renowned Tate Liverpool gallery. Manchester’s history as a manufacturing powerhouse is traced at the Museum of Science and Industry and you’ll usually catch an impressive show at The Lowry Theatre.
