Elephant Rocks

Giant, billion-year-old granite stand end-to-end like a train of red circus elephants at this park. A self-guiding trail (with Braille signage) winds among these geologic wonders. Picnic sites and flush restrooms are available.

Bonne Terre Mine Tours

39 North Allen Street, Bonne Terre, MO

Walking Tour Take a one hour guided walking tour through the first and second levels of the mine along the "Old Mule Trail", showing where miners dug with a pick and shovel in the 1800's. The earliest shaft was dug in 1864. Along this tour, you will see Huge Pillar Rooms, Grand Canyon, Billion Gallon Lake, Trout Pond, Underground Flower Gardens, Beautiful Calcite Falls, and ancient Abandoned Mining Tools and Rail Systems.

Pickle Springs Natural Area is a deep, forested gorge consisting of geological formations and plants that are found in few other places. Visitors will find examples of a sandstone glade, talus, forest, savanna, as well as a number of rare species of plants and animals. The area is noted for its blooming wild azalea (photo left) and wildflowers in the spring. According to local legend, the area is named after William Pickles.
