While Brighton's reputation as a seaside spa for the fashionable set grew throughout the 19th century, the North Laine remained blighted by poor living conditions. The iconic Isetta ‘bubble car’ was manufactured here in the 1950s, and in the 1960s the area’s inexpensive housing and proximity to London began to attract entrepreneurs and artists who set up new shops and businesses. Anita Roddick opened the world’s first Body Shop here in 1976, and the North Laine continued to evolve, becoming the multicultural, bohemian and creative district it remains today. Alongside the vintage fashion stores, independent eateries and colourful street art, the Indo-Islamic domes and minarets of the Royal Pavilion, built as a summer palace for George IV, make it the area’s most distinctive landmark.

    North Laine

The North Laine is a creative hub that has been described as "the Modern Brighton". Locals and visitors flock to unique eateries serving everything from bagels to sushi, and buskers and magicians dot the street corners. You can easily spend a morning browsing the area's independent boutiques, secondhand record stores and colourful flea markets.

    North Laine
    Royal Pavilion

Set within pleasant gardens that are popular with picnickers, the extravagant Royal Pavilion was redesigned by architect John Nash for the Prince Regent, later George IV. Inside you'll discover Chinese-influenced interiors that reflect the prince's flamboyant tastes, a lavish Banqueting Hall, exotic furnishings and a spectacular Music Room.

    Royal Pavilion
    Brighton Palace Pier

If you take a walk along Brighton's famous Palace Pier, you can pause to admire the beautiful Regency architecture along the seafront, have your fortune read in a traditional caravan, or just stretch out in a deckchair to enjoy the view. Keep a close eye on your chips though, as this is prime hunting territory for the city's resident seagulls.

    Brighton Palace Pier
    i360 Observation Tower

The British Airways i360 is a futuristic observation tower set opposite Brighton’s West Pier. You can enjoy 360-degree views from its glass viewing platform, which gently rises to 450 feet and can hold 200 people. Visit in the evening, when it becomes the Sky Bar, to sip champagne and admire the city’s twinkling lights. Open from summer 2016.

    i360 Observation Tower
    Brighton Dome

A short walk from the hotel, Brighton Dome is the pride of the city’s cultural quarter. You can catch classical concerts beneath the art deco ceiling of the Concert Hall, drama and comedy at the intimate Studio Theatre or touring bands at the Corn Exchange. It’s linked by a tunnel to the Royal Pavilion, open rarely, but worth watching out for.

    Brighton Dome
    Brighton Centre

You can book tickets to see some of the biggest names in showbiz at the huge Brighton Centre, on the seafront close to lively West Street. It’s also a major events venue and a typical weekend might feature a tattoo convention, a touring international circus, the annual Beard & Moustache Championships or even a political conference.

    Brighton Centre
    Komedia

On your way through the North Laine, look up to spot the unmistakable, red-and-white striped legs that mark the Komedia comedy club. You might catch the country's hottest stand-ups trying out new material here, or discover the next big thing. If you prefer film, you'll find blockbusters and arthouse gems at the Duke’s at Komedia cinema upstairs.

    Komedia
    Victorian Bandstand in Hove

You can enjoy music in the open air at the elegant Victorian bandstand on the seafront in Hove. Built in 1884, it has been beautifully restored and during the summer hosts afternoon concerts, weddings and even ballroom dancing. At other times you can sit back with a coffee and enjoy the view of the beach from the café downstairs.

    Victorian Bandstand in Hove
    Choccywoccydoodah

If you have a sweet tooth, don’t miss Choccywoccydoodah. This local institution turns baking into an art form, and has become famous for cakes and chocolates so spectacular that you might be reluctant to eat them. As you’d expect in Brighton, everything is made with local, free range eggs, and tastes just as good as it looks.

    Choccywoccydoodah
    Freshly-made Snacks

Snacking on freshly-made doughnuts and crepes as you meander along the pier, while trying to avoid the attentions of the seagulls, is one of the quintessential Brighton experiences. These sugary snacks are just the thing for an energy boost, and if you’re in the mood for something more substantial, the pier also serves up delicious fish and chips.

    Freshly-made Snacks
    Laine Deli

A gentle stroll from the hotel, the Laine Deli is great for an informal business meeting or grabbing a snack while you’re exploring. You can pick up tasty smoothies, pastries and coffee here, made with fresh and locally-sourced ingredients in keeping with the city's sustainable credentials. There’s free WiFi on the sunny terrace too.

    Laine Deli
    North Laine Brewhouse

If you wander down to the North Laine Brewhouse, you can sample a fantastic range of local craft beers, ales and porters, including the famous Laines Best. If you’re a real connoisseur, why not take a tour of their state-of-the-art facilities to learn how the team produce their brews, with tastings thrown in, of course.
