Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark

Sai Kung, New Territories,

The Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark, 150-square-kilometer area is home to some of Hong Kong's most stunning geological features. Many sites are spread out over two distinct regions: the sedimentary rock region in the northeast New Territories, and the volcanic rock region in Sai Kung, which is home to unique honeycomb-shaped acidic volcanic rock columns, formed by volcanic eruptions some 140 million years ago. There is also a multitude of beaches, islands, sea caves and even tombolos to explore.

Yim Tin Tsai

Sai Kung, New Territories,

15-minute boat ride from Sai Kung public pier lies Yim Tin Tsai, a tiny island with a rich and storied past. Its name literally means ’Little Salt Pan’ in Cantonese and it is the only place in Hong Kong where salt is produced today. That fascinating history may have been lost if not for a movement to revive the island that began in about 2000.

Tin Hau-tempel

Sai Kung, New Territories,

This Grade II listed building dedicated to the Goddess of the Sea maintains its original early 20th century facade. Located just off Po Tung Road, the temple is filled with worshippers during the annual Tin Hau Festival, in celebration of the birthday of the sea goddess, which falls on the 23rd day of the third lunar month.

Maclehose-wandelroute

Sai Kung, New Territories,

The first two sections of the famous MacLehose Trail set a rhythm of alternating peak and beach. Let the waves refresh you before you turn your feet towards the next rise, where the sounds of the sea drop away again to leave you with your own laboured breathing.
