Insider Tips

London has always attracted all nationalities due to the richness of its culture, the diversity of its society and its vibrant economy. The tolerance of the people living here has helped the city become a melting pot of ethnic groups: currently over 300 different languages are spoken in London. Be aware of the cultures around you and respect their ways.
Steeped in history, this London hotel was once the site of a royal residence. Now the epitome of contemporary elegance, the hotel is located just steps from Hyde Park and in view of Buckingham Palace. Enjoy people watching in our chic lounge or escape to our full-service spa. Savour the menu at Theo Randall’s, voted the ‘finest Italian in London’ or try Cookbook Café offering a fresh, seasonal menu. Rated 4.4 out of 5 by 406 reviewers.
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Snobbish and uncaring I've stayed at quite a few of the Intercontinental group hotels, including a number of Intercontinental hotels, and being an Ambassador member I am used to a fairly consistent and good levels of service. Unfortunately I have to say that this Intercontinental hotel lets them down in pretty much every way imaginable, a truly dreadful hotel, poor service and attitudes that went out in the 80's, somewhere I will not be rushing back to stay. Arrival The check in experience initially was fine, we were staying for a weekend to visit the Winter Wonderland just across the road and was told that our room had been upgraded to the club floor as per my membership. We were given our keys and headed up to the 7th floor to find that the door would not open, so one of us went back down to be told that we were not meant to be on the 7th floor and given new cards for the 1st floor, so back up to 7th to collect the other and back down to 1st to our room which was a decent room, but certainly didn't feel like any kind of upgrade, and no apology for being sent all around the hotel. Called reception to enquire about getting club lounge access, and was told it was at the hotels discretion if we could have access, and in this instance it was full so we could not have access. Ok, so that was the first snotty attitude. Then asked if our rate included breakfast to be told it was not, but we could have a discounted breakfast for £24 each if we wanted to buy in advance, all fine, but the way it was said was .. well, just rude. Room ‘Service’ We had occasion to contact room service 3 times to request things, and on all 3 occasions we had to call back after 30-40 minutes to re-request what we had asked for, a shabby useless service in my view. Door Man (Security guard) and General Arrogance of Staff When I stay in a hotel I decide how I wish to dress, not the hotel or its clientele, and I don't care if the hotel is in Mayfair or the East End, if I want to wear a pair of trainers and a baseball cap, I will, I am the paying customer. Clearly the large chap on the door with the hat had prejudged us, deciding that we were not of the right quality to be staying at this hotel, and each time we tried to come in we were quizzed about staying at the hotel and made to feel like we shouldn't be there along with very disapproving looks, which made us feel exceptionally uncomfortable and unwelcome. As per the other comments on here, it appears we are not the only one, so perhaps the hotel management should consider the impression they are giving, or perhaps that is what they prefer? This was a general feeling from most of the staff in this hotel, really a very unwelcoming hotel. Summary Sadly, what should be a great hotel was let down by its staff and their dreadful attitudes toward anyone who does not appear to be rich or dressed in a specific way. Rooms are average, nothing special. Location is fantastic, but that really is the hotels only redeeming feature. The worst Intercontinental experience I have ever had, and from reading other comments, maybe the management should pay attention. 24 December 2014

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Not Toddler Friendly... We had a two night weekend stay here with a three year old. The website says its family friendly but we didn't find this to be the case. - Staff a little unhelpful - clearly not used to small children. - Broken high chairs in the restaurant (and too small to get a toddler in!). - Not great food options for toddlers. Also had to wait for the restaurants to open at 6pm.. - Staff not that familer with toddler needs in general. The hotel was also a bit chaotic. - Door staff focused on certain customers. - Forgotten newspapers. - Still cleaning room when we were shown in. - Noisy hotel on the first night.. - No reflection of IHG status. We raised this at the time and we have been offered a free breakfast next time. To be honest we'd probably find somewhere more family frindly than go back so we won't take them up on it. There are a lot of great hotels out there that really cater for Toddlers... Intercontinental could learn a lot from them. 23 December 2014
