Good dining experience for evening meal.

We did not hire a car for our stay in Christchurch as the only parking is open air in a gravel car park. On arrival the cab driver asked us to be as quick we could because there is no arrival concourse, the cab had to stop on the street outside in a 'No Standing' zone. There was no Concierge to assist with luggage, for the five days we were there did not see anyone at the Concierge desk. As a Spire Elite IHG member I was upgraded to an Executive room. The room was spartan to say the least, there was a swivel chair at the desk, and a window seat from which it was difficult to see TV because of extreme angle of sight. If there was someone on the chair at desk they had to move if someone wanted walk past, the bed was so close. At least the bed was comfortable. A newspaper was supposed to be delivered each day, they managed two days, on the first day of non-delivery I called 'Concierge' at 7.45am,a joke, was told by the front desk the papers would be delivered when the morning shift came on in about 15 minutes, an hour later I went down stairs and collected it myself from a table outside the lift. The one redeeming feature of our stay was the restaurant for dinner, we dined there 3 nights of our stay, the menu and food were excellent, the restaurant staff were also very good, especially Zoe. Breakfast was woeful, poor selection of food, most of it cold, the staff were totally disinterested. Tried room service to see if it was an improvement, no such luck. The meal arrived minus the fruit juice that had been ordered, one poached egg with the sausage and hash brown, an empty salt cellar, no plate to butter toast on, all food was cold to the point it almost being inedible. Tried the Cafe 1851, it was okay as cafe's go but hardly an alternative to breakfast dining experience. On paying the account was astounded to be told that my Diner's card was not acceptable as the owner of the hotel did not deal with Diner's. Interestingly in the In room Dining menu it showed payment could be made with AX, Diners, Visa or Mastercard, when this was brought to reception's attention they blamed it on the Chef as he is apparently responsible for the menu. We travel to Christchurch many times a year and stayed at the previous Crowne Plaza which we considered one of our favourite hotels. Certainly will not be staying there again.
