Things to do

Independence Square

This is the biggest square in Minsk. Here you can still find the statue of Lenin, behind which there is the House of Government. On the left there is Minsk Executive Committee and the main building of the main univercity of the country - Belarusian State University. The main street of the city - Independence ave. - starts here. Famous shopping mall "Stolitsa" is also situated on the square.

Karl Marks Street

It is one of the coziest streets in Minsk. Just walk along the street and you will feel it. Besides numerous pubs and restaurants here you can find the National Museum of History and Culture, the State Museum of Nature, old building of the former Mariinskaya female grammar school, Aleksandrovsky park with the functioning fountain decorated with the sculpture of the Boy and a Swan; Yanka Kupala National Academic Theatre, the Residence of the President of Belarus and real famous tank T-34.

The Belarusian State Circus

It is the only circus in the world that is located on the central avenue of the country capital. It’s one of the best world and European arenas. The Circus creates its own performances and shows and also organizes the tours of international circus groups in Belarus. The artists of the Belarusian State Circus have claimed awards at a number of prestigious international contests and festivals.

Bolshoi Opera and Ballet Theatre

It is one of Europe’s biggest theaters and the architectural landmark of Minsk. The theater is also famous for its talented performers. The repertoire of the Bolshoi Theater of Belarus has 70 opera and ballet performances. In addition, the Bolshoi Theater holds annual large-scale cultural projects both on its stage and in other places of Belarus.

The October Square

Originally functioning as a small marketplace until the first half of the 19th century, October Square is now a massive open space that effectively serves as the center of the city where a small granite pyramid marks the spot. Most famous as a place of celebration, public events and an outdoor skating rink during the winter. Here you can find a stately building of the Trade Union Palace of Culture and monumental the Palace of Republic and an outdoor exhibition Minsk Vernissage.

Monumental and imposing it is the last monument of the Soviet architecture. The Palace is generously sized – 100x100 meters and rises at 4 meters. It is one of the main concert halls in Minsk. The most famous artists from Belarus and abroad perform here. Many governmental meetings and important high-level events are held there.

The Minsk City Hall (Ratusha)

The City Hall is a symbol of the city government. It appeared in the city in connection with the acquisition of Magdeburg Law in Minsk. The Hall was destroyed by order of Emperor Nicholas I in 1857. The reconstruction of the City Hall began in 1980. Approximately 15 years were needed for experts to prepare a draft restoration work. The restored Minsk hall was opened November 4, 2004. Its appearance is the same as at the beginning of the XIX century. The Town Hall Square was also reconstructed.

Cathedral of the Holy Spirit

One of the most instantly recognizable symbols of Minsk is this magnificent, gleaming, two-towered Orthodox cathedral in the heart of the city. Here you can find an amazing collection of icons. Enter the church, admire these true works of art, feel the atmosphere of kindness and peace.

Troitskoye Predmestye (The Trinity Suburb)

Minsk’s old town. Built between 1982 and 1985 on the site of a former settlement dating from the 12th century, Trinity does at least offer a break from the sprawling concrete of the city center. The birthplace of the Belarusian poet and journalist Maxim Bogdanovich, the area boasts a number of decent restaurants and bars, making it worth having a look round, especially during the summer.

Church of Saints Simon and Helena

This neo-Romanesque church was designed by Polish architects Tomasz Pajzderski and Władysław Marconi. The cornerstone was laid in 1905 and the church was completed in 1910. The bricks for its walls were sourced from Częstochowa, whilst the roof tiles came from Włocławek. Its construction was financed by Edward Woyniłłowicz (1847-1928). The church was named and consecrated in memory of Woyniłłowicz's two deceased children, Szymon and Helena.

The National Art Museum of the Republic of Belarus

It is the largest museum in the country. More than twenty seven thousand works of art – creating twenty miscellaneous collections and comprising two main representative ones: the one of national art and the other of monuments of art of the countries and nations of the world – can be found on exposition, at the branches of the Museum and its depositories.

National Academic Theatre of Yanka Kupala

It is the oldest theatre of Belarus. It was opened on September 14, 1920, it is located in a building of the Minsk provincial theatre, constructed under the project of architects Karol Kozlowski and Konstantin Uvedensky in 1890 by means of donations of citizens. In 1944 has been renamed in honour of classic of the Belarusian literature, poet Yanka Kupala.

Museum of Miniatures "Strana Mini"

Dinamo National Olympic Stadium
