Have a flutter on the horses at Sandown Park Racecourse, less than 10 minutes' drive from the hotel. For a special occasion, you can top off a day watching the races with an upscale meal at the racecourse's fine dining restaurant, Equus. There are two other restaurants on site, or you can relax with a picnic in the grounds. In summer, you can also enjoy open-air concerts on the racetrack.

Chessington World of Adventures combines a theme park with a zoo, making it great for families. It's also just 10 minutes away by car. Kids and adults alike will want to brave Dragon's Fury, one of Chessington's most challenging roller coasters. National Rail can whisk you from Surbiton station, Kingston to London's Waterloo station in as little as 20 minutes. Get new perspectives on the natural world at Kew Royal Botanical Gardens, 25 minutes by car from the hotel. To start with, the 18-metre-high Treetop Walkway lets visitors view birds, insects, lichen and fungi at treetop level. You can then descend below ground to the Rhizotron lab, which examines the interplay of soil, tree roots and organisms beneath the earth.

You can spend at least a day touring Hampton Court Palace, just 8 minutes by car from the hotel. Its Cumberland Art Gallery contains Royal Collection masterpieces, including paintings by Rembrandt, Caravaggio, Holbein, van Dyck and Canaletto. Also unmissable are Henry VIII's Great Hall, one of Britain's oldest theatres, and the palace's famous puzzle-hedge maze, Britain's oldest.
