Although it appears regal, the building at Karlstrasse 10 was originally intended for a commoner. In 1882, the big businessman August Schmieder had Josef Durm build him a splendid retirement home in the Italian palace style. With its lavish figurative decoration and precious marble panels, the palace in Karlsruhe has always fascinated and attracted people.

In a city dripping with history, the love of old things is obvious. Countless second-hand stores, antique shops and social department stores can be found in our beautiful city. Are you looking for well-preserved clothing styles? Then the "LaLu Second Hand Boutique" and "Nearly New" are the right places for you. Everyday and household items? Visit the Baden State Museum and experience 50,000 years of cultural history. The highlight: the 42 metre high castle tower, from where you can enjoy a magnificent view over Karlsruhe. From here you can see why Karlsruhe is also known as the fan-shaped city. From the tower, nine avenues fan out southwards towards the city centre - a city layout that is unique in Germany.

A detour to Durlach, the largest and oldest district of Karlsruhe, is an absolute highlight and a must for every visitor! Discover picturesque alleyways, the impressive Karlsburg Castle with its museums and the historic Basler Torturm, Durlach's last remaining city gate. An absolute magnet in Karlsruhe is the market square with its impressive seven metre high pyramid, which is the city's landmark and houses the tomb of the city's founder Margrave Karl Wilhelm von Baden-Durlach. Here you will regularly find great markets, including the wonderful flower market (Jan.-Nov., Mon.-Sat.), the pyramid market (Saturdays) with delicious international specialities and on Wednesdays the varied evening market with tasty regional food.
