Three miles from the hotel, 13th-century Peterborough Cathedral is one of the country's finest Norman in England. Roam the aisles to admire architecture, a mosaic floor and a 13th-century painted ceiling. Look out for the tomb of Catherine of Aragon, divorced by Henry VIII but allowed to keep her head. From spring to autumn you can book up and climb the tower for sweeping views from the roof.

Ride aboard an old steam train at nearby Nene Valley Railway, 10 minutes' drive from the hotel. Book early for the chance to travel in the cab and help to drive, a real treat for enthusiasts. Back in the city centre, on the second and final Tuesdays of the month costumed guides lead the brave on a spooky candlelit Ghost Tour through 'haunted' Peterborough Museum.

An 18-minute drive from the hotel, the grand country estate at Burghley House was a setting for the 2005 film of "Pride and Prejudice". The huge Elizabethan manor has a warren of rooms filled with Old Master Paintings, tapestries and period furniture. Outside, kids can dodge hidden water jets in the Garden of Surprises and adults can stroll in spectacular grounds landscaped by Capability Brown.

Why not take a day off for some retail therapy? Peterborough city centre is just three miles away, and you'll find everything from fashion to toys among 90 high-street stores at Queensgate shopping mall. For something more traditional, the city's covered market is open Tuesday to Saturday. It has a food hall and 150 stalls where you can browse for fresh fruit and vegetables, flowers and clothes.
