Friedrichshafen is known as the birthplace of the Zeppelin, the colossal blimp-like airships used in WWI bombing raids. Overlooking Lake Constance, the Zeppelin Museum features historical exhibits such as a recreated LZ 129 Hindenburg airship and displays about the infamous 1937 disaster. A gallery showcases south German art from the Middle Ages to the present, including an Otto Dix collection.
Locals know the best way to experience the beauty of Lake Constance: the Pfänderbahn. After a 35-minute drive to the Austrian town of Bregenz, you'll arrive at the base of Pfänder mountain to board its gondola. This glass-box cable car ride takes you high above surrounding towns for spectacular views of Lake Constance. Afterwards, visit ibexes, deer and wild boars in the Alpine Wildlife Park.
