Neighbourhoods
Explore our neighbourhood.
From a tiny Roman outpost to a financial hub in the 1700s when the City was born, London continues to thrive and reinvent itself. Our neighbourhood today is still famous as the heart of the dynamic financial district, with centuries of history proudly on show with landmarks such as the Tower of London, Tower Bridge and the domed St Paul’s Cathedral. Today’s London is a modern-day trading powerhouse, with an ever-changing skyline punctuated with distinctive skyscrapers such as The Shard with its viewing platform, and edgy structures including The Gherkin and the Walkie Talkie Tower.
You’ll see echoes of London’s heritage in our boutique hotel, from bespoke murals of Tower Bridge in the lobby to brick designs in each guest room giving a nod to the Roman Wall a short walk away.
There’s no denying the grisly history – 125 poor souls were executed here at the Tower Hill scaffold in the 1700s. Today the flora-filled lawns make a tranquil spot with views to the Tower of London. Visit Edwin Lutyens’ colonnaded Tower Hill Memorial, dedicated to 24,000 sailors killed in the World Wars with no known graves.
Step back two millennia to an impressive section of the Roman City Wall next to a London Underground station in the heart of Tower Hill. Get up close to the remains of this one-time sturdy fortification, which once stretched for more than two miles surrounding the ancient city of Londinium, as the city was then known.
If the market’s interior reminds you of Diagon Alley, scenes from a Harry Potter film were shot here. Even Muggles will feel the magic under the glass roof of this enchanting, centuries-old arcade. Sashay through the luxury designer boutiques, and look out for original butchers’ hooks, marking the stalls of past meat traders.
Step inside the high-speed lift at this 310m-high, 95-storey silver skyscraper, and within seconds you’re whizzing up to the viewing platform. Gaze at panoramas of the meandering River Thames threading past St. Paul’s Cathedral and the Gherkin, and peer through digital telescopes for a closer look. You can even book yoga sessions here.
You can’t get much closer to Shakespeare’s world than this – a faithful reconstruction of an Elizabethan, open-air playhouse. In summer, perch on benches to watch the Bard’s plays on a wooden stage, or buy bargain tickets to stand in the circular courtyard. The candlelit Sam Wanamaker Playhouse next door has performances in winter.
Whether you’re listening to a free Sunday organ recital, chamber music or an orchestral Mozart mass, you’d be hard pushed to peel your eyes from the surroundings. The white-domed cathedral, an 17th-century masterpiece built by Sir Christopher Wren, is famed for its mosaics and tombs – an awe-inspiring backdrop for musical events.
This cultural hub in funky Shoreditch is set in a subterranean railway tunnel with stone archways, built underneath tube carriages and shipping containers. Its eclectic line-up of musical offerings ranges from techno DJ sets and global hip hop bands, fusion bands to indie rock. Join the party atmosphere for a strobe-light fest.
Get into a Victorian vibe at Wilton’s, with ornate cast-iron pillars, a wooden stage and gilded balconies. Recently refurbished yet still oozing faded decadence, the world’s oldest music hall serves up a menu of magical entertainment, from Marc Almond’s diva solo performance to reinterpreted Dickens plays or an edgy cabaret show.
Like the neighbourhood that gave our restaurant its name, Square Mile is contemporary and dynamic. It's a perfect pit-stop for a working lunch of smoked haddock fishcakes or dinner of Thai green curry or the Square Mile special burger. Relax after a busy day with a zingy G&T, or try our vodka-based house cocktail, the Indigo Wow.
Foodies, get ready to feast! This famous indoor market near London Bridge has gourmet treats at every turn. Choose delicacies ranging from Austrian cured meats to Mexican ancho chillies, or tuck into handmade pork pies and wok-fried noodles at street-food stalls. Look out for cooking demos and workshops to get you into the mood.
You can try a whole host of obscure ales and craft beers at this cosy neighbourhood gastropub near Tower Bridge. With décor echoing an American diner, settle onto a lime-green banquette and sample Punk IPA, cask Pumphouse pale ale or oatmeal stout, accompanied by hearty eats like a buttermilk-fried chicken burger or merguez sub.
Nestled in St Michael’s Alley, this traditional pub with its red-stone exterior was the site of London’s first coffee house. Here the 17th-century diarist Samuel Pepys got his caffeine fix. Step inside for an array of Kentish cask ales, or head downstairs to Todd’s Wine Bar for a glass of chilled white with a seafood platter.
