An icon of the city's skyline, Manchester Town Hall is a Victorian, neo-gothic municipal building and the home of Manchester City Council, alongside a number of local government bodies. The original building was constructed in 1868 and designed by Alfred Waterhouse.

Part of the city's history for almost 600 years, Manchester Cathedral was originally a collegiate church, commissioned by King Henry V in 1421.
