RECOMMENDATIONS

THE PERFECT DAY

MORNING

The desert has a beauty quite unlike any other landscape. It is, however, extremely hot in the day, so the best time to see it is at night. Personally, I think this is a happy coincidence, as the desert is at its most magnificent when bathed in a lunar glow. First-time and seasoned visitors alike can experience a sunrise desert safari. Departing from the hotel, take a thrilling ride in a 4x4 across the dunes and watch the glorious sunrise and the light slowly illuminating the golden sand.

AFTERNOON

In the afternoon, have a wonderful lunch at the Al Bandar restaurant on Al Corniche Street. The food is great, the dhow-like structure is quite unique, and if you ask at the concierge desk in advance, we can book you a table on the seafront. After a hearty lunch, go and check out the gold souk for some special mementoes of your trip.

EVENING

As the sun sets, there really is only one place to be: by the sea. Take an evening cruise on a dhow in and around the Corniche and overlook the amazing skyline of Doha. Once the sun has set enjoy the place to go for fresh fish and seafood at the Fish Market located at the InterContinental Doha on the beach by the Arabian Sea.

INSIDER TIPS

LOCAL CULTURE

Bargain

While visiting the souqs in Qatar always bargain with the shopkeepers which are part of the tradition. Always offer a much lower price to the original offer and slowly work upwards until you feel the price is right.

ETIQUETTE

Do not sit in a way that shows the soles of your feet or shoes to your Qatari hosts as this is considered impolite and do please dress modestly when out in public as a show of respect towards the culture and tradition of Qatar.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Do ask permission from people before you take their photograph. Many older people and most women object to being photographed. Equally, do not take pictures of government buildings, the police or armed forces.

Taxi

Public taxis known as Karwa can be hailed from the side of the road. They are a great and very reasonably priced way of getting around. Please note that many people and taxi drivers still navigate by landmarks rather than street addresses.

Weather in Qatar

At temperatures reaching over 40ºC you need to drink plenty of water and don't forget to use a high-factor sunblock on all exposed skin.

DID YOU KNOW ?

Dhows

The traditional wooden boats or dhows of the Arabian Sea can be seen along Doha Corniche, in the harbours of Al Wakra and Al Khor. The word 'dhow' is derived from the Swahili word 'dau', meaning fishing boat.

Doha Corniche

The picturesque Doha Corniche is flanked by the calm waters of the bay, their colours changing by the hour, varying from turquoise to emerald to cobalt blue.

Exchange rate

The Qatari Riyal is pegged to the United States Dollar - fluctuation is not common, however we recommend checking exchange rates prior to travel.

Importation of Alcohol

The importation of Alcohol is strictly not permitted - even in the format of Duty Free purchased in other airports or on in-bound flights.

Pearl trade

The pearl trade was once the mainstay of the Qatari economy.

WHAT TO PACK

Dress

Please respect local culture and dress appropriately in public places, even in extreme humidity.

Qatari Riyals

All major international currencies can be exchanged in Doha. Currency Exchange is available in the arrival hall of Doha International Airport and all major shopping malls.

Camera

Don't forget to pack your camera as Qatar offers amazing and interesting mix of sites to visit and you would not want to miss the chance to bring home some of those memories.

Sunblock, sunglasses and hat

Bring your sunblock, sunglasses and a hat to protect against the bright and extremely hot sun.
