Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Some Diamonds, Some Roughs There are some valid reasons for staying at the Sydney Intercontinental. There is an ambiance that is unmistakable - a feeling of quality. This is present in the main lobbies and in the service of many staff members. The rooms are very clean and the bedding is excellent. The bright LED lighting above the bathtub does make a luxurious soak difficult - bring a pair of sunglasses!! It is frustrating to have to remind staff of the newspaper delivery and still not receive it. Also there was no in room gift or fruit on arrival that are expectations of the Ambassador program.I am not sure if I received a room upgrade however the 4 pm checkout was wonderful as this stay was about recharging my batteries. In room dining was excellent and the Opera Cafe for breakfast is well worth a visit. There is quite a wide variety of dining options and the staff are efficient. They do need however to be more aware of when guests require more tea and coffee. Comments to this effect were made by couples on either side of my table. Checking in and out is smooth. I asked for a taxi and after waiting 10 minutes walked directly outside to find a line of them waiting - maybe a miscommunication on my part? Would I recommend this hotel unreservedly? I think I will stay on another occasion where hopefully some of the bugs of my experience can be ironed out before committing to a recommendation. 19 November 2014
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Great location but aging decor. Club is under-resourced. We have stayed many times over the past 15 years and really appreciated the extensive refurbishment that was done about 10 years ago. However, although the rooms are well maintained the decor is now showing its age. A stylish update is needed. Gone are the glory days of a spectacular flower show in the Cortile (street level lobby lounge) and fruit bowls in the lift lobbies of guest floors, etc. These touches make a good hotel great - so the hotel seems to be losing its greatness. Rooms are a good size but bathroom is small by contemporary standards. The big disappointment is Club InterContinental. The view is amazing but unfortunately the quality of wines served is just plain cheap. Ditto food. Example: The sparkling wine tastes like it sells for less than $10/bottle retail. Not good enough when there's a daily surcharge for the Club of about $160/day. Staff throughout the hotel are well trained and very courteous, although some of those in the Club seemed disinterested during the cocktail period. Free internet appreciated - and it is very fast. Overall, a pleasant stay but this hotel is sadly no longer on our list of recommended hotels due to the feeling of penny-pinching, especially in the Club. 18 November 2014
