Bentonville Battlefield, also known as the Bentonville Battlefield State Historic Site, is an American Civil War battlefield in Johnston County, North Carolina. It was the site of the 1865 battle of Bentonville, fought in the waning days of the Civil War. This major battle, the largest ever fought in North Carolina, was the only significant attempt to defeat the large Union army of Gen. Sherman during its march through the Carolinas. The site was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1996.
