    Neighbourhoods

    Explore our neighbourhood culture

Have you ever seen a heaven on earth? When you arrive in Shangri-La, the land of ancient myths of idyllic beauty and tranquility greets you. The geographic features of the Tibetan Plateau are awe-inspiring, with scenic views that are distinctively beautiful depending on the season. Also, many ethnic groups live here, displaying the ethnic diversity and uniquely rich cultural heritage of this region. The Ancient Town of Dukezong is one of the oldest and culturally richest places in Shangri-La. The town, which was first founded as a key stopping point on the Ancient Tea Horse Road for the Han-Tibetan exchanges, encapsulates the Tibetan cultural heritage in its historically storied buildings and distinct architecture. Simply walking around and exploring Dukezong’s labyrinthine lanes, you will find yourself wholeheartedly captivated by the neighbourhood charm. The experience that transcends time and place awaits modern travelers who seek “The Sun and the Moon in One’s Heart” in the land of the “Lost Horizon”.

    Napahai Grassland

Naphai Grassland offers distinctively mesmerizing sceneries depending on the time of year. In spring, the landscape is warm with signs of a new cycle of life, while the natural backdrop features cattle and sheep grazing on a vast grassland with the snow-capped mountains of the Tibetan Plateau in the background. In summer, the lake gently sways as streams flow down with water from freshly melted snow and flowers bloom in many different shapes and colors. In autumn, flocks of cattle and sheep epitomizes the picturesque scene of an alpine pasture. In winter, it is the birdwatching season as the lake drains into large meadows that invite various rare species of birds, including black-necked cranes. The symbolic grassland is also home to many Tibetan villagers, who add the human element to the grandeur of nature.

    Napahai Grassland
    Dukezong Ancient Town

The ancient town is also known as “Moonlight City” because on a clear night, its white stone buildings are illuminated by bright moonlight and reflect a silver glow. Interestingly, its counterpart is Niwangzong Town by the Naizi River, which is known as the Sunshine City. Having once enjoyed the prosperity of frontier trade and the hustle and bustle of the exchange markets, the “Moonlight City” has now come to encapsulate Tibetan heritage with its authentic Tibetan-style buildings and historical vestiges. Walk along the streets of Moonlight Square, which is at the center of the ancient city that is laid out in the shape of an eight-petal lotus flower. The Red Army Long March Museum is situated in the houses of the streets on the north of the square. On the south side is the Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture Museum. The Turtle Mountain Park is built on the west side of the square, in which the world-class Tibetan prayer wheels and the Big Buddha Temple are located. Be a part of a Guozhuang Dance, and experience the uniquely local Tibetan charm.

    Ganden Sumtseling Monastery

The Ganden Sumtseling Monastery, also known as the “Little Potala Palace”, is situated on top of a hill overlooking a scenic lake to the north of Shangri-La. It is the largest Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Yunnan Province, and its various structures are archetypical of Tibetan architecture with gilded roofs and red and white walls. The monastery also houses an 8-meter-tall gilded statue of Shakyamuni Buddha, along with a plethora of timeless treasures of Tibetan Buddhism.

    Potatso National Park

As the first national park in China, Potatso National Park is renowned for well-preserved primitive landscape that is rich with geological features including lakes, forests, meadows, streams, and brooks. Its three major scenic spots are Shudu Lake, Militangya Alpine Pastures, and Bitahai Natural Reserve. In Shudu Lake, spring and summer brings the fragrance of the blooming nature as the lake gently sways, while autumn and winter means the golden yellow of the birch forest and then growing white of the snow-capped mountains. “Militang” in Militangya Alpine Meadow’s name means “Buddha’s eye grassland” in Tibetan language, because its shape is akin to a slender Buddha’s eye. It is the preeminent highland pasture of Shangri-La. Bitahai Natural Reserve has its Bita Lake, which is renowned as a “highland pearl” for the richness in biological vegetation. Here, you can enjoy the magical scenery of “fish drunk on azalea petals” when azaleas bloom and its petals fall onto the surface of the lake to be eaten by fish.

    Starry Nights

In Shangri-La, if you happen to be overwhelmed by the natural beauty of surrounding snow-capped mountains and unique cultural charms of Tibetan prayer flags and Buddhist temples, you can always look up to the magnificently clear, starry sky. Because of the region’s special geography with three parallel rivers, the visibility is extremely high at night. So, wherever you are in Shangri-La, the night sky is filled with the Milky Way and the natural wonders of the universe. Imagine the vast universe against the backdrop of snow-capped mountains, canyons, and lakes – your experience will be unforgettable.

    Starry Nights
    Xianzi

Xianzi, or Binyong in Tibetan language, is a traditional stringed instrument that is known for its simple yet ingenious design and beautiful tune. When the sound of the musical instrument and its clear and bright timbre is echoed across the Tibetan Plateau, locals gather around the bonfire, dancing and singing to the mesmerizing natural beauty under the moonlight.

    Guozhuang Dance

In Shangri-La, the history of Guozhuang Dance can be traced back to before the 7th century. Meaning “singing and dancing in a circle” in Tibetan language, the folk dance showcases participants dancing in a circle while singing, and is unaccompanied by instruments. Guozhuang Dance is rich in song and lyrics that convey the traditional values of friendship and unity. Also, it features dancing with arms being lifted, swung, and shaken, while forming team formations of expanding and contracting circles. Originally developed to be performed around a campfire, the dance now has many variations and is typically performed at local religious ceremonies, traditional folk festivals, and small parties. When the ancient town of Dukezong is immersed in the afterglow, dance with the locals around a campfire and join the experience of unique culture and ethnic allure.

    Custard Cake

In Tibetan cuisine, “Tu” is a custard cheese cake that is made from yak butter, brown sugar, and water. Its production process is unique – the dregs of yak milk are first deep fried, and then made into cakes. Its color and fragrance are also uniquely appetizing. If you happen to wander into the local streets and come across a store selling one, it is a must-try.

    Matsutake Mushroom

Matsutake mushroom is a local specialty of Shangri-La, famous for its superior taste and aroma. Locally, it is called “Beshing Shamo” which means oak mushroom in Tibetan language, clearly indicating its symbiotic relationship with evergreen oaks on the slopes of the Tibetan Plateau. The peak season is from July to October, and only 3 of the mushroom’s 10-day growth cycle are considered to be the best picking period. The Matsutake mushrooms picked here are sold over the world, mainly Japan – where it is highly valued as a key ingredient for fragrant fall delicacies.

    Butter Milk Tea

In Shangri-La, the time-honored tradition of drinking butter milk tea has long been ingrained in the local culture. Made from yak ghee and strong tea, it is typically served as a symbol of hospitality when welcoming guests. The hot beverage not only has a uniquely creamy and salty taste but also boosts energy and keeps the body warm against the plateau’s winds. While the thick flavor of the tea may at first be unsavory, adding Yunnan walnuts or homemade nuts may help you enjoy its mellow taste – just like the locals.
