The oldest church in Heliopolis was built in 1907 to be the centre of the new city of Heliopolis. It is linked to the Baron Palace by a tunnel and Baron Empain was buried inside it. It has a lovely ceiling with coloured glass and marble decorations.

Spend a half-day exploring the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC), Egypt’s first museum dedicated to the entire span of Egyptian civilization. Located in Fustat, this state-of-the-art museum showcases the continuity of Egyptian heritage from prehistoric times through the Pharaonic and Islamic periods to modern day. Explore the old mosques and churches, visit the Islamic Museum, the Coptic Museum which has fascinating early Christian shawls, embroidery and artefacts, and if you've got time, go along to the Synagogue of Ben Ezra.

Wadi Degla (Wadi is Arabic For Valley) is a 30km-long canyon that became a national park in 1999. It's a haven for wildlife - look out for the desert foxes and gazelles. People also visit Wadi Degla for hikes, bike rides and picnics.

If you want to do a bit of quick shopping, the Stars Centre in the Citystars complex next door is handy. It also houses a small theme park.

Memorable views of Cairo and the Citadel, ideal for an evening stroll before picking one of the many local restaurants for a relaxing dinner. It's better to go after sunset to enjoy the panoramic view of Cairo by night.

Sound and Light show. The Pyramids are one of the most spectacular sights in the world. If you can't visit them in the morning, catch this fabulous night-time show at the feet of the Sphinx, available in different languages.

Five minutes from the hotel, it is a convenient place to saunter around and absorb local life.

The island of Al-Gazira, one of many small islands in the Nile, is a landmark. The 187-metre-high Cairo Tower, built there in 1961, has a restaurant and a viewing platform at the top. From here you get a complete panorama of Cairo.

Old fortress built by Salah El Din Al Ayoubi, founder of the Ayoubbid Dynasty, 1171-1250. The Citadel encompasses the mosque of Mohamed Ali, a magnificent architectural masterpiece made of Alabaster.

The church is built on top of the southern gate of the old Babylon fortress, hence the name. The nave is suspended above the passage ('Muallaqa' translates as 'suspended'). It is the most famous Coptic Christian church in the city and is in old Cairo, also known as the Coptic section.

Believed to have been created by one man, Imhotep. He has been called a doctor, sage, architect, astronomer and high priest. During an excavation in 1924-26, a pedestal of a statue of the pharaoh Djoser, believed to be from 2,500BC, was uncovered. This complex is thought to be the first known major work in stone.

This is the palace of Prince Mohamed Ali. The architecture is a blend of Fatimid and Mameluke styles, with some decorations and elements from the Ottoman period.

A masterpiece of Mamluke architecture, with inlaid bronze doors with gold and silver marble panelling. On special occasions the fountain used to run with sherbet.
