The island of Al-Gazira, one of many small islands in the Nile, is a landmark. The 187-metre-high Cairo Tower, built there in 1961, has a restaurant and a viewing platform at the top. From here you get a complete panorama of Cairo.

During an excavation in 1924-26, a pedestal of a statue of the pharaoh Djoser, believed to be from 2,500BC, was uncovered. This complex is thought to be the first known major work in stone.
