TUILERIES GARDENS

Rue de Rivoli, Paris, 75001

Stretching between Place de la Concorde and the Louvre Museum, the gravelled alleyways of the gardens, named after the tile factories that stood here in the Middle-Ages, have been chic promenades ever since. They opened to the public in the 16th century. Every year, between mid-June and mid-August, a fun fair is held in the gardens. The area is much appreciated by morning joggers, and by families for its playgrounds and ponds.

ARC DE TRIOMPHE

Place Charles de Gaulle, Paris, 75008

Originally intended as a memorial commemorating Napoleon's victories, the world's most famous triumphal arch now houses the tomb of the unknown soldier. Standing 164 feet high, it lies at the head of the Champs-Elysees, and paves the road to La Defense. This monument is the 6th most visited in Paris.

CHATEAU DE VERSAILLES

Centuries of makeovers have made Versailles the best known and most sumptuously clad château in the world - a veritable bouquet of over-the-top brilliance, and an absolute must see. It was built under court architects Le Vaux and Mansart between 1662 and 1690, on the order of King Louis XIV, also known as the "Sun King". It was inhabited by the King and his court in 1682. During the summer, on Sundays, enjoy a great musical fountain show through the gardens.
