No weekend news papers available (USA is available on weekdays) nor did staff know where to get them. Breakfast was the 'normal' variety, good coffee. August 27, 2014

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Dream Cruise Experience We stayed for 5 nights during the Dream Cruise event so this was not a normal stay. The venue was crowded for the last 3 nights and we had some issues with smoking. However, our kudos to Daren (who always goes far above and beyond), Adriane (who is fantastic) and Courtney (who has only recently become assistant manager) for making it a very good experience. I travel at least 8 days a month for work. I wish all hotels were as friendly as this one. We also love the remodeling which is in progress. August 19, 2014

The good things first: - Great value for money - No frills hotel and for someone who doesn't want the frills this is great - The complimentary breakfast is great - It's fresh and wholesome - Located suitably near downtown Birmingham What went wrong: - The first morning as I filled up my bathtub, I got a call from the front desk saying that the hotel reception had water leakage because of my bathtub and so I couldnt use it. I was told a plumber will come to my room to check and fix the issue. No one came. I called again to ask what I need to do since I had to shower and leave for work. I was then told that no one can come right away so I should use the shower (not the bath tub). I checked again in the evening if they could fix the leak and if I could use the bathtub. They said, no.. I'll have to make do only with the shower and there's no chance of shifting me to another room. I agree that it's a budget hotel, but these are really basic necessities that must be available to your customers. - Some other basic utilities like a soap-dish on the wash basin were missing.. Would be good to have some of these. August 3, 2014

The key was rekeyed by mistake and I was locked out of my room. The key locked me out a second time and I had to get a key again to get in my room There were not enough seats and people had to stand to eat breakfast All and all a terrible experience July 28, 2014

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Move the smoke alarm!!!! The worst part of my experience was the blaring, piercing smoke alarm, which was activated by my using the shower! Huh??? Apparently the smoke detector "sees" the shower vapor and activates, but there was no way to turn on a fan so I left the bathroom door open. Why the smoke alarm is RIGHT NEXT TO THE BATHROOM DOOR was not explained to my satisfaction. While some of the staff were pleasant, my overall experience was a general malaise and lack of interest in the satisfaction of the guests. Sorry, but never again. June 30, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Cosmetics I rate a hotel on cosmetics, not on friendly service. I feel management companies use good service as a crutch to make up for a lack of investment in hotels. I don't care if someone greets me. I want plush towels, not what was in the room. I also did not like the disposable cups for drinking water in the room. I found this particularly offensive as there are signs in the room suggesting re-using linens to conserve resources (which we all know is spin for the hotel trying to save money) yet if the mentality is to be mindful of the environment, why are disposable cups, not glass ones the option. This made me afraid to eat the free breakfast. I was very deterred by the person who checked me in pushing the rewards program on me--it really gave me a negative view of the property, coupled with her chop shop way of telling me to plug the iPhone charger into a computer as a plug was not there. Reviews we read on the internet prior to our stay rated the hotel poorly, but we chose it anyway, because of its convenient location. We were pleasantly surprised to find a lovely, clean, quiet hotel, with attentive staff and abundant breakfast choices. We enjoyed having coffee and tea available at all times in the lobby - even at midnight! Despite its location on a busy street, it was quiet inside, even when we had our door open to the balcony. We were able to walk to local shopping and dining facilities. The gym was sufficient for one of our party; the other one of us was able to walk to a local gym for additional amenities. We came to Birmingham for a wedding and thought our past experiences in OTHER Holiday Inn Express hotels assured us of a solid place for our invited guests. Unfortunately we were wrong. The hotel staff was unprepared to handle the guests that came in throughout the week, the reservations were completely a mess, the excuses for the mix-ups abounded, assurances that everything was rectified were plentiful, confirmed rooms were not available at check-in for a variety of reasons, and other than the comfortable bed and good breakfast, it was a disaster. If I were to plan it again, I would most certainly move the wedding venue to another location where there is a choice of hotels nearby. This hotel was the only disappointment-for that I am grateful. I would NOT recommend this hotel until the staff is retrained and the renovations are complete. June 10, 2014

Staff and service was decent. Lady working at breakfast room is excellent and very nice (minor problem with decaf coffee that had coffee grounds....couldn't drink it). Front desk is ok. Just a bit less friendly than expected. Overall I would stay there again because of the location and the decent service. April 21, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Beware I was incredibly disappointed with my recent stay and cannot recommend this hotel. They are undergoing a renovation, but I apparently was in a renovated room - it didn't seem like it and my stay overall was less than satisfactory. Some of the lowlights from my stay: My bathroom was missing an overhead light bulb (the same was true in my second room after I moved) - this was not fixed until 3 requests. The lightswitch when you walked into the room didn't turn anything on? The tub grout was left unfinished in the bathroom near the tile floor. Blue painters tape was still on a portion of the wall. The wallpaper in the room was uneven and shoddily applied. The bed had hard/semi-sharp areas along the seams/edges. My bed was left only partially made one day. The breakfast options did not have a single piece of fruit? The laundry seemed to run noisily all night and early in the morning (could have been the proximity to my room). The staff seemed to congregate in the hallways and front desk gossiping and speaking loudly about internal matters. The renovators used the one elevator in the building to move furniture and more than morning had it completely blocked from customer use. April 6, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Not What I Expected I recently stayed at this HIE for business purposes. Now I totally understand that this building was under renovation. I would say they probably should have been closed until it was completed. The first room that was given looked like the bed had crumbs on it. I called to the desk and they moved me to a different room. The next room didn't have crumbs on the bed but the room was tidy. Still the pillows in room looked like they had been there for 10 or so years so I chose to visit the local Meijers to buy a pillow to sleep in. The two lamps next to the bed did not work although they had light bulbs. The coffee pot and fridge didn't work yet they were plugged in. The bathroom had one light in it and it was missing a shower fan and no light where there should have been one. The shower looked very old and had dirt stains on it. The breakfast variety I will say was pleasant. Overall I will never stay at that Hotel again. For the money that was paid it was a complete rip off. Very disappointed with this place. Now I will say the staff seemed to be nice. Too bad the accommodations were not. April 5, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Remodeling created some concerns A great staff and the property is in need of remodeling, but the promised hours of "9 to 5" were more like 8 to 5. The remodelers accidentally set off the fire alarm and while the hotel staff knew that it was an accident, no one told me until I got down to the front desk. The very kind front desk agent said that I was probably the only customer still in the hotel, and she had forgotten my room number or would have called to tell me it was a false alarm. Alas, again a very kind staff and I will visit again after the much-needed remodeling. March 23, 2014

Easy access from main roads, located in a great neighborhood with tons of restaurants ( check out "social kitchen & bar" couple minutes by foot ) nice staff and VERY comfortable bed. Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Friendly staff, dated hotel. The staff is friendly and accommodating. The location is fantastic. The hotel itself is dated, tired, and in desperate need of updating. The HIE breakfast is also in desperate need of updating, but at this location you have awesome dining alternatives just steps away. Staircase was consistently dirty. Fitness roon has three pieces of equipment, only one worked. December 25, 2013
