Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Easter holiday stay This an excellent hotel to stay in the staff are friendly and helpful.When we arrived just after 2pm our room was not ready but the staff said we could leave our bags with them but we decided to wait in the lounge and have a drink which we didn't have to pay for because of the room situation.Once we got to the room we found it spotless along with the rest of the hotel.The location is ideal as its only a couple of minutes on foot from the centre of Newcastle and the train station.The lounge is good as well as we came in after a long day to sit and have a drink.My husband especially liked that there was sky sports and my son liked that there was free wifi so that he could go on his iPad.Overall the hotel was great and would go back when visiting Newcastle again.The only thing was the size of the room when a family of four stays in there it would be really cramped but as there was only the 3 of us it was fine. We chose this hotel because it was cheaper than its main rivals for that night. The location is good for arriving from rail or road and we would stay here again next time we visit Newcastle. We stayed there during a visit to Newcastle a couple of years ago and were pleased with our experience at that time, so decided to make a reservation there for this trip as well. The hotel staff were, as before, helpful and gracious, even making reservations for us at another HIE at a stop we decided to make at the last minute prior to returning to London. As before, our accommodations were clean and comfortable. Breakfast was substantial. Would definitely stay there again because of the central location, good value and excellent overall quality. Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Poor customer service & a bad night's sleep We stayed in Room 509 recently and did not have a good night's sleep for two reasons: 1) Continuous noise. Despite having asked for a very quiet room when booking, there was a continuous humming noise throughout the night (a machine?) that led to us having a very distrurbed sleep. We were also disturbed by recurrent 'cracking' sounds (no idea of their origin). 2) Unsolicited wake-up call from hotel staff. To aggravate matters, we were woken just before 6 a.m. by a hotel staff member calling our room as a wake-up call that we had not requested - this was 2 hours earlier than we had intended to get up. No explanation or regrets were given by the hotel. On top of this, the hotel demonstrated very poor customer service by not responding to the e-mail I sent afterwards to the Customer Feedback address (16 Feb.). Since Holiday Inn Express encourages customers to provide feedback, the least it could do would be to respond. March 13, 2013

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Central location but avoid Fridays! Great location - only a few minute from the train station and car hire depot. Other 'guests' - as the first question on check in was "are you part of a stag party?" it was obvious this hotel is popular with hen/stag parties - big downside was the large intimidating all male groups on stag parties dominating the bar/restaurant area and the shouting and screaming female 'guests' running a drunken rampage in the corridor outside my room at 0200 hours, 0345 hours and 0600 hours. A lack of sleep may suit the party guests but means I will unlikely book again for business travel. March 8, 2013

Some bad things: 1) A little noise coming from the light in the room (it was probably due to electrocute of a bulb) 2) The internet access in the room fee (£ 10 for 24 hours). But you can stay in the lobby where there is a bar open 24 hours and free wi-fi March 4, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Cheap, clean and comfortable I wanted somewhere for myself and my 3 children to stay in Central Newcastle that would be cheap, clean and comfortable. This hotel fitted the criteria and we weren't disappointed. It is very close to the Station even if we nearly walked past it (no map at the time!). To have breakfast included was a bonus and we all had sufficient to eat on both days. Thanks! February 24, 2013

The location was excellent and within walking distance for all local services including St James Park, the shops and the local museums. The staff couldn't have been more helpful, friendly or accomodating. We would definitely stay there again. February 20, 2013

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Great location but needs a technical refresh This hotel is in a great location - it's a short walk from either Newcastle Central (Rail and Metro) or St James (Metro) stations. Staff were friendly and helpful and there's an abundance of information in the attractive lobby. Had a fantastic nights sleep, and an excellent breakfast, but my stay was marred by a complete lack of entertainment. The TV in room turned off after a few minutes on, and leaving off for half an hour or so brought it back to life for a few minutes again. Anyway, thought I could live with movies on laptop and the Internet, maybe streaming, for the evening, but then couldn't locate any form of connection. Tried wireless first as hotel advertised as having complimentary wifi, but there was no signal at all in my room. As a last chance, tried the lead on the desk, clicked connect and was told I needed to select a package from the *zero* packages offered to me. Overall, great for sleeping, but when I extended my stay in Newcastle the following night, I chose another hotel. January 15, 2013

Good location with multi-storey parking next door and very reasonable parking charges. Room was not very large but fine for a couple of days. Buffet breakfast was included with decent choice and quality. Would use the HI Express again. January 8, 2013

Only downside no arrangement with the council re parking and the inconvenience of having to get up early to feed the meter in the multi storey parking . January 6, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by A great stay Everything about our stay was good with one tiny exception, we had an access room and whilst the bathroom is huge and great for families, the interior of this bathroom was very tired. I got the feeling that it is not used that often and some of the fittings were hanging off the wall and it really was below par for HIE standards with respect to cleanliness. It could do with being refurbished frankly. Housekeeping on this floor seemed to be male, and without being intentionally sexist, it really needed a woman's eye for detail on the cleanliness front. Other than that we had a geat stay. Staff were fab and you did the best scrambled eggs anywhere. We will definately stay here when we next come up to see Granddad. January 4, 2013

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Central for everything that makes a great week end Had a great week end the hotel was everything you needed clean rooms polite helpful staff, central for every thing in Newcastle parking was easy although there is a charge of £5 a day, Free breakfast eat in the relaxing lounge read the free papers with a cuppa. Have a late nightcap at the lounge bar before lights out what more could you ask. Close to china town just a short walk away lots of eating places close by and good fun bars whole experience was good would I stay at the hotel again you bet I would . Do I reccomend it yes I do its all you need at a good price. Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by value for money this hotel is in a great location for the metro arena, its within 5 mins walking distance. it has parking close by and is 10 mins walking distance from main shopping area. great value for money although bars prices are bit expensive, was bit disappointed with the breakfast buffet but on a whole i would recommend this hotel December 13, 2012
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Friendly staff and great room On arrival staff were extremely friendly and explained the parking situation. Room was clean and bed comfy. Although quite compact, for the 2 nights we stayed the space was perfect. Fresh towels both days, our kettle was faulty as it kept switching itself on, but staff corrected that within a few hours. Breakfast was included and was adequate, a choice of hot or cold served buffet style we filled up for the day ahead. I've stayed in a few hotels and only for 1-2 nights and I would say this is one of the best. Both night and day staff were friendly, from barmen in the evning to the kitchen staff serving breakfast. Very central to city centre 5-10min walk to town shopping! Overall an enjoyable pleasant stay. December 11, 2012

The hotel couldn't have been in a better location for us, short walk to city centre, train station, theatre and bars. The rooms were modern and clean, however my only issue was the room smelt of urine but that will not put us off staying again. December 3, 2012

The room was ready for me and I was greeted by a drink and a kit-kat. Free internet in the bar area around reception was convenient for me to undertake work but why not free for Platinum members in the room as well just as some other HIEs offer? A really enjoyable 2-night stay in a well located hotel that met my needs well. I shall undoubtedly return for yet another visit. November 27, 2012
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by A great stay with the kids We had a great saturday last minute stay over. The staff were fabulous. Friendly reception, bar, breakfast. Only minor downside was the staff not beijng prepared for the breakfast rush at 955hrs, Sunday morning. We know the risk of trying at this time. We were in no rush, so it didn't matter this time. I assume this happens every week. Wouldn't it be great if Holiday Inn could learn to cope with this rush. November 21, 2012

It is located in the city centre which means I have a wide choice of places to eat, and on occasions when I bring my bike it is a great location to start from when touring the local area in all directions, with well post cycle paths.
