Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Rude front desk This is a decent place to pull off the road and sleep. Breakfast is free and is worth every cent. I would not want to spend any additional time at this hotel. The front desk clerk was too busy reading to check us in properly, requiring an additional trip downstairs to get things right. August 14, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Unplanned stop While on a college tour, we stopped in Salem. We had no reservations and were only planning to stay one night. it was a Sunday night - Katelyn checked us in effieciently and without a fuss. The rate was less than posted on line - the room was huge, bed very comfortable, bathroom more than adequate. The facility was impecably clean. We had a hard time finding dinner on a Sunday evening fairly late so it was great to return to the hotel, hop in the pool and hot tub and find warm chocolate chip cookies just baked by Katelyn and still warm. My only 'ding' would be that breakfast was mediocre. In the middle of August no fruit, not even a banana and some of the baked goods looked pretty tired. If we pick this town for the college the Holiday Inn Express will be our hotel. August 14, 2013

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Comfortable hotel for our family of 5! Best hotel in a long time My family of 5 used this hotel for one night on our trip to Georgia. The staff was wonderful. The rooms were clean and nicely decorated. The beds were comfortable. The decor in the lobby is really nice. A+ stay for us! We will be staying there again on our ride home for sure. August 13, 2013
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Needs changes I stay at Holiday Inn Express all over the country. This one is probably the worst one I have stayed at. The room was dark with only 40 watt or smaller light bulbs. In the bathroom, the light was so poor I used a flashlight to assist the lights just to shave. The breakfast was terrible due to the preparation of the food. The scrambled eggs were so overcooked they were "egg balls". When they served the egg and cheese omelet, it was so overcooked that the edges of the omelet were brown. The coffee was not hot nor kept fresh. August 13, 2013

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Quality has gone down Stayed in this hotel 2 years ago and the quality was much better than it is now. The room was not as clean as it could be (hairs on the floor, soap chips in the tub etc). The front desk personnel was not as friendly as she could have been. The breakfast didn't have as much variety has before ( no fruit, no variety of yogurt , coffee was not replaced and hot at the bar). It just seemed the quality was lacking vs. many of the other Holiday Inn Express hotels I've stayed at. Since there are others along this stretch of interstate, I will by pass this one and stay at a different one. July 28, 2013

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Alarming stay! Had just checked into the room when a massive thunderstorm blew up. A lightening bolt and a load clap of thunder set off the fire alarms. So a little excitement to start my stay but handled well by the hotel staff and responding fire department even thought no fire. Front desk seems to be always a little understaffed on my stays here but the staff is friendly and recognize me as gold member. The total hotel areas from the outside to inside are well kept and clean. Ample parking and easy excess to entrance doors. Room is clean and well furnished. The beds could be a little softer and the walls are a little thin but quite crowd tends to stay here it appears. Will continue to stay here on trips to Roanoke / Salem, VA. June 25, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good Stay I enjoyed my stay but there needed to be more people on at the Front Desk when I checked in. The front desk person was on the phone, the other line was ringing, there was a customer trying to check in. I was lucky as a Priority Club member, she checked me in quickly. I always think that phones can wait when there is a person waiting to check in. Also, your breakfast buffet should include fresh fruit and yogurt as that is what most female business travelers eat for breakfast. The room was great and the bed was very comfortable! June 23, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Courteous Staff and Beautiful property After 3 days and 1,400 miles we arrived at the HIE in Salem, VA. We were pleasantly surprised by the beautiful setting in the mountains and the fresh, clean, orderly rooms and lobby. The staff was more than helpful, and did everything they could to make our stay an easy and comfortable one. The room itself was a King Leisure with a sofa, which includes a microwave and refrigerator and sofa. Everything was spotless, the sheets and bed were extremely comfortable, and the shower was clean and refreshing with a nice line of products. We had a great nights rest in this quiet hotel. Within walking distance is a Burger King, which allowed us to stretch our legs and grab a quick bite to eat. We had stayed in other HIE along the way and this one by far is the best we have ever stayed at. As Priority Club members, we enjoy the breakfasts and amenities. The breakfast room also had a huge picture window facing the mountains with a nice variety of tasty breakfast items. We did a load of wash and were able to purchase detergents at the front desk for a small charge. The washer and dryer were spotless and did a fine job. It bears repeating to mention that the staff at this hotel went the extra mile (no pun intended) to assure our stay was satisfactory to us. It was an excellent choice. Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Run For The Wall Riders In the midst of a long hard day and being completely drenched in the pouring rain, I was directed to the Holiday Inn not the Holiday Inn Express a few more miles down the road. At the Holiday Inn of course they couldn't find my reservation because I was at the wrong hotel. While dripping water all over the place the desk clerk offered me a room there. She said she would call the Holiday Inn Express and make the cancelation. Well guess what? They refused to accept my cancelation. So, back on the bike in the pouring rain and on the freeway to the Holiday Inn Express. Not only was this very uncomfortable, it was dangerous and I got splashed over and over and over again by cars and big rigs. The desk clerk at the Holiday Inn Express barely said one word to me and I chose to keep my mouth shut as well. I understand that it's a hotel's right to refuse a cancelation, but to put customers in a dangerous situation is worse. I will never stay at that particular hotel again nor will I recommend it to anyone. Holiday Inn & Holiday Inn Express have gone to the bottom of my list of places to stay. June 18, 2013

However, not wanting to drive any further, I stopped in & asked if there were any vacancies. The front desk girl was friendly & efficient. I would like to mention that there is not enough lighting around the sink-area in the bathroom. There was plenty of light in the shower, but needs more light in the bathroom. May 31, 2013

Great hotel- new clean and convenient but the breakfast didn't not have any milk and was making NO alternatives like going over to the gas station and buying some for the guests which is what I did! There also was no half and half for coffee which they did not make any concessions for either. Disappointed in how a simple customer service issue could have been handled so differently. May 28, 2013

I booked late, so this was the closest I could get, but with the hotel being right off of I-81, Radford was a quick shoot down I-81 South (about 30 min). Did a late check-in and the night clerk was very pleasant and welcoming. What staff we saw were very friendly and the rooms were very clean and comfortable. We didn't get to experience breakfast because we just didn't have the time to stop since we had to get to Radford so early. However, the breakfast area looked clean and inviting and the people we did see eating seemed to be enjoying it. I would definitely stay here again! May 16, 2013

The breakfast had lots to choose from and all the items were fresh and well prepared. The only negative is that there are no restaurants nearby but about 5 miles down the road plenty of restaurants to choose from. April 24, 2013

I arrived after midnight and was greeted warmly at the front desk and was given a nice little thank you bag. I was very tired and the room was such a pleasant surprise! Immaculate, well appointed! I so enjoyed the stay! This was so appreciated as the stay in Baltimore was not a Holiday Inn and I found the hotel extremely noisy, although the staff was very nice, the room was extremely dirty!
