Welcome to Our Neighbourhood at Hotel Indigo Newcastle
Hotel Indigo Newcastle is situated in and inspired by Grainger Town, the heart of this historic city. Unique among Newcastle hotels, our building and interiors draw inspiration from the area’s neoclassical architecture. We love the historic 1830s beauty of our local area which is why it’s made a strong impact on the look of our rooms, lobby and lounge. Bold printed rugs and subtle room details reflect the patterns of the local buildings and connect the interior of our hotel to the city’s vibrant and lively streets.
Locally inspired
Our interiors are inspired by the neoclassical Tyneside styles you’ll see nearby, featuring classical proportions and repeating patterns. You’ll find photos and artwork depicting Tyne Bridge, Grainger Market and many of the city’s best buildings on our walls – meaning you can explore the local area before you step outside our doors! Grainger Lounge, our bar and restaurant uses bold colours, monochrome patterned floors and chic design. It takes its name and design inspiration, from Robert Grainger, the architect of our local area.
Discover the neighbourhood
The wonderful, Grainger Market is a stone’s throw from our boutique hotel and a good spot for coffee and people watching. And if you’ve got a head for heights, the nearby Sage Gateshead Arts Centre offers an exhilarating guided roof experience.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent stay We stayed for 2nts at holiday inn express. Would definitely recommend this hotel for a stay at Newcastle. Situated around well known restaurants, 10min drive to metro centre, or walking distance if you would prefer. Complimentary breakfast was a pleasant surprise, good choice, which was an added bonus. Room was comfortable although our room was to rear end of hotel which runs pararel to train line which was noisy with windows open. Would definitely stay at this hotel again but would request room to front. 05 August 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Does the job Overall cant complain as rooms clean, beds omertà be and breakfast good. HOWEVER I had booked 8 rooms and was told this was NOT A GROUP BOOKING and plus I ad 8 separate ref numbers. When I arrived at the hotel the very uninterested and unhelpful manager on duty demanded a £50 deposit PER ROOM as it was a group booking!! I had to give my credit card as obviously nobody had extra £50 with them! Anyone booking bear this in mind and eat it confirmed in writing. That was only down side. 02 August 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Internet !! Free parking, off to a good start. Room a little warm, well it was a hot day, open the window, yes it's safe enough. Ask the early morning visitors to be a little quieter when they leave and turn down their radios. Seems to have become an early morning coffee stop for the local law, Internet was a bit of a joke, finally got on line at 4.30am as the Police were leaving. The guy on night duty worked hard to restore the internet and I am grateful. Local advice from the desk ensured we enjoyed Newcastle and overall we enjoyed our visit. 27 July 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Metro Centre Holiday Inn Express Comfortable hotel in a good location for visting areas around Newcastle with lovely pub next door a real ale and a good meal. 23 July 2013
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by OK stay The stay was OK. No charge for the parking that's always a plus. We were on the ground floor and the carpet in the hall is badly stained the resulting smell of Damp was unpleasant. The internet was something of a joke, the night porter/manager got us online at 4.30am on the day we left. Reassuring to see so many Police Officers using the lounge to watch TV and drink coffee, maybe that's why the prices are edging up. 23 July 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by A good stay I was greeted well on arrival and my stay of two nights was very pleasant. Lounge/bar area gave the hotel atmosphere whilst the bedroom was clean and quiet, only lacking perhaps pictures on a wall or two. Will be staying again. 22 July 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Holiday Inn Express Newcastle Metro Centre Again, as usual for your group, the hotel was found to be of the highest quality, room was excellent, service was to a very high quality and again exceeded our expectations. Well Done!!!! 15 July 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by comfprtable bed and roomy room good location to visit the metro centre and Newcastle centre with convenienct bus service right into the centre> our room was spacious and clean. Breakfast was plentiful and staffs were friendly and helpful that made our stay enjoyable. 28 June 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by good location for bus pass holders We had driven a couple of thousand miles touring but here we deserted the car for the bus, travelling up the coast to Dunnottar and, more locally, to Seaton Delaval etc etc. Move within city of Newcastle and with ease to Sage etc in Gateshead and, of course, the Angel of the North and the Gateshead Metro, the largest shopping centre in Europe. So much better than being in city centre with nowhere to park and the aggro of driving in a highly congested area with its one way streets etc etc. 19 June 2013
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Functionality of facilities TV not working, wash basin plug not opening or closing. Room not clean. Wall light not working. 04 June 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by great location hotel pleasure to stay at.very clean room.modern and up to date.staff on the reception were very helpful.would definitely stay here again. 25 May 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by 1st May Bank Holiday weekend Good value hotel, not a million miles from Newcastle and Metro Centre. Room was comfortable, bathroom adequate. Breakfast was lacking a few fresher and healthier options, certainly when I was eating anyway. 13 May 2013
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Good hotel and location but........... I have stayed at this hotel many times now and I have booked it again for future business trips. The rooms are comfortable and clean and there is plenty of choice of places to eat for an out of town hotel. Access is easy from the A1. My only gripe is the poor lighting in the room, which seems to becoming more common in Holiday Inn hotels. Very low light behind blue shades and small spot lights. Fine if you are relaxing and watching TV but if you are a business customer (like 95% are during the week) and you are working into the evening on a computer it is very uncomfortable experience as the light is so bad. Even the spotlight on the desk does not give you sufficient light to work comfortably. PLEASE provide better room lighting for those needing it when they are on business..... 02 May 2013
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Drinks I stay here regularly, the staff and accomodation are good, but as a business traveller on his own two things are poor. The choice of tv channels is not as good as other hotel chains, but one that only slightly wrankles. The real biggie is the quality and price of drinks. Over £4 for a pint of poorly kept (usually flat) lager in a bar devoid of customers...............do yourself a favour, go to the Skiff Inn next door, great food, good choice of well kept drinks and a great atmosphere. You won't be alone, most of the Holiday Inn guests will be there too !................... 22 April 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by weekend visit Staff and service excellent. a very pleasant atmosphere, able to completely relax. Only one minor issue, the key card had a mind of its own and had to be recoded three times, a bit of a pain when you are on floor 5. 18 April 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by What you expect Exactly what you expect from a HI express good service relaxing and comfortable. Great location by Metro centre and close to city centre. Always stay here when in Newcastle 17 April 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Perfect place to stay We had to be in Newcastle for several visits to family recently and stayed at the Holiday Inn Express near the Metro Centre. The staff are helpful, friendly and excellent at their jobs, a real credit to the company. The Hotel itself was alway clean and tidy and the breakfast selections were always plentiful and the hot food was always hot. We would highly recommend this Hotel to anyone wanting to stay in the area we will certainly be staying there again. I shall be putting it as one of my favourites on Trip Advisor, it is worth it. 14 April 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by good venue This Holiday Inn Express is so good to reach for travel in the North East. Very clean. Close to a choice of restaurants. 03 April 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 Convenient location I have stayed here a time or two as the location is convenient for us when heading south of the border. Proximity to the Metrocentre isn't bad, but the riverside path can get very muddy, and I wouldn't want to walk it after dark. There is no denying, this hotel is used by 'party people' at weekends. In light of this I made a specific request when reserving my room online, and reiterated my request via email. The email wasn't answered, and the room allocated during a rather cheerless check-in was the polar opposite of what I'd asked for. In the end I was given a room in my preferred location. It was clean and comfortable. There was no mention of, or recognition for, being a Priority Club member whatsoever. Disappointing. 21 March 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent weekend base Hotel in brilliant location for Metro Centre. Reception staff absolutely brilliant. Very friendly, welcoming and helpful. Had problem with the bed leg and they sorted it immediately. Rooms spacious enough, very clean and ideal for what you need. Bathroooms compact with no bath - but are also very clean and well laid out. ideal though. Breakfast more than enough for us - good choice of fruit, cereal, yoghurts, toast, pastries etc - didn't bother with the sausages or scrambled eggs, but looked fine and plentiful. Will definately be back - thanks for a great stay. The staff make it worthwhile. 16 March 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good BUT Like most Holiday Inn express what you see is what you get. Convenient locations, pleasant staff, good clean rooms & a basic but reasonable quality breakfast included. But.. In this day & age to charge £12 for wifi acess is not acceptable especially when a majority of weekday customers are on business, so for many this is essential. Then to find the access is SO SLOW you cannot reasonably do any work! This is a major drawback for using this chain. 05 March 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by God value for money Good location, nice hotel, staff always been helpful, rooms are dated could do with an refurb, I wish the rooms came with a bath, showers only, breakfast ok not a great choice. 17 February 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Clean comfortable room, brilliant staff The rooms are comfortable, functional and clean. Pleased to say the soap dispensers have changed, much prefer them to the old brand. We requested a extra blanket and another duvet was promptly delivered to our room. The staff at this Holiday Inn are exceptional. 18 January 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by A VERY COMFORTABLE FRIENDLY STAY We had never been to Newcastle before so hadn't got a clue where anything was, the road system is rather !!!!!!!!, but we got around,......mainly thanks to the efficient, friendly young woman on the reception, who helped us plan where to go and what buses or taxi's to get and even phoned for an ambulance when my husband was ill. Cannot thank you enough. The room for the 3 of us was really comfortable our son loved the fact he also had a double bed, lovely ensuite facilities. The breakfast was an added bonus as I had forgotten it was included so we gratefully received it in very pleasant surroundings. Would definitely reccommend this hotel (with it's FREE parking ) and so close to the metro centre........... Many Many Thanks 07 January 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Very comfortable bed..very clean room and great service and food Took a short weekend break with my partner and from the moment we entered the hotel the staff were excellent and very helpful and obliging......the room was excellent and very clean and comfortable....and the breakfast was excellent too so we really had a lovely time and on my next visit up here i will use this hotel again and will not hesitate to recommend it to my family.....friends and others connected to us. Please pass to the staff here our most sincere thanks for a wonderful stay. 02 January 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 Comfortable stay This was my second time at the HI Express Metrocentre. On both occasions I requested a quiet room and both times I was allocated a room in the Tyne annexe. Very nice. Before, I had a twin-room and, on this occasion, a family room. Both were very clean and with a view of the river. The staff are always so friendly too. Special shout-out to the friendly girl with the pink hair and glasses, on reception :) The Metrocentre is within walking distance, as is Asda, Ikea, etc. I will most certainly stay at this hotel in the future. 02 January 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Very helpful staff Room was fine & everything worked as required Breakfast very good plus it's free The staff at this HI express are very friendly & helpful. 17 December 2012
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Great service, extremely uncomfortable beds! Check in was very prompt. First impressions of the hotel were very good. Unfortunately it all ends when you go to bed! We have travelled & stayed in lots of hotels but I'm afraid to say that this was the most horrendous nights sleep my 2 children, husband & I have ever experienced! The beds were so uncomfortable & the pillows & quilts are the thinnest & cheapest quality ever! So for that reason couldn't reccommend this hotel as a good night sleep is much needed especially when travelling with the family! 16 December 2012
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Not up to the usual standard On arrival we had expected the same standard as we had received two weeks previous at Holiday Inn Stirling but it fell short as Stirling presented us as gold customers with a voucher for 2 hours free wifi. We were advised that Newcastle do not do that but we could have as many 30min free sessions in the lobby. Not really what I wanted as I prefer to work in my room. My husband and I spent almost an hour trying to get signed in to the internet, everyone seemed to be in the same boat and when we went back to reception they advised that they had been having problems that day and gave us another code. Eventually I gave up and went up to my room and topped up my internet dongle to allow me to get on with my work. While we were in the lobby we decided to have a drink and when I asked for a vodka and fresh orange I was advised that they did not have any orange!!. Great start to our stay. The hot cooked breakfast is not the greatest throughout the chain and would prefer a larger choice of a continental breakfast, bring back the old way. The rest of our stay was trouble free and this experience would not stop us staying again. 14 December 2012
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Bar snacks and breakfast. We ordered 2 paninis and waited 15 minutes for these. When they arrived they were very overcooked and virtually inedible. Even if we were able to eat them, they were very overpriced at over £6 each. Breakfast - We had to clear our own table before sitting down to eat. 14 December 2012
