It's a 15-minute walk from the hotel to the Museum of Lancashire, which chronicles 2,000 years of local history. You can gaze at a collection of Viking silver, experience the sounds and smells of WWI trenches, and put your kids on trial in the dock. The Forest of Bowland, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty nine miles from the hotel, encompasses moorland and bogs and is a habitat for rare birds.

Bike or hike the Guild Wheel, a 21-mile greenway that loops around Preston. Mostly off-road, to the south the trail follows the curves of the River Ribble. It'll take you through city parks, the Docklands, leafy neighbourhoods, ancient woods and close to a nature reserve. Whether you're out for a jog or a ride, or letting the kids run loose, pubs and cafés along the route are perfect for a rest.

No visit to the city is complete without a spot of retail therapy. With a five-minute stroll you can reach Miller Arcade. Home to big name stores and a few independent retailers, this is a Victorian gem. Head up Fishergate, Preston's main shopping artery, for high street stores. Shopping centres beckon but duck down quaint side streets, where you will find a quirky selection of independents.

Plan ahead to visit the Ribble Steam Railway at the Riversway Docklands, a 10-minute drive from the hotel. As well as taking a train ride, you can explore a huge collection of industrial locomotives. The railway and museum are open on select dates only, including most weekends from May to September. Book in advance for Santa specials in December.
