Set in 500 acres of glorious parkland, Wentworth Castle Gardens offers visitors a glimpse into the past. At its centre is a grand Georgian mansion, open for tours periodically. But you can always amble around the formal landscaped gardens, discover charming follies or blow the cobwebs away as you walk through the deer park. Don't forget to visit the beautifully restored Victorian conservatory.

For some high-adrenaline fun, head to the Metrodome Leisure Complex. It's home to Calypso Cove Waterpark, a slick bowling alley and the Metrodome Arena, a live music venue. At Calypso Cove the kids can explore a pirate-themed water wonderland, with fast-flowing flume slides, a huge pirate ship and play pools. Knock down some pins while disco lights spin and the alley fills with smoke machine fog.

Cannon Hall Museum, Park and Gardens is an enchanting mix of culture, history and nature. The imposing Georgian House museum displays paintings and decorative arts, and you can explore the grand restored ballroom. Outside, the kids can run around Fairyland, a magical, Victorian-era garden. At nearby Cannon Hall Farm, the little ones can meet llamas and pygmy goats and clamber about the play area.

Head to a picnic spot with a difference at the atmospheric ruins of Monk Bretton Priory, just 4 miles from the hotel. Founded in the 12th century as a Cluniac monastery, what remains is a clear ground plan, west range and a gatehouse from the 15th century. Wander around the historic site before settling down on a patch of grass with a good book and picnic lunch. There's even free parking.
