Many of Dumfries and Galloway's castles are within 40 minutes' drive of the hotel. Close to the English border, the 13th-century Caerlaverock Castle was one of Scotland's most important strongholds. As well as exploring its siege warfare exhibition, guests can wander through its leafy nature trail. The Renaissance-style Drumlanrig Castle houses original artworks by Rembrandt and Gainsborough.

A 25-minute drive from the hotel, the Annan Museum houses a permanent display showcasing the history of the town and local area, from the Bronze age through 4,000 years right up to modern times. Temporary exhibitions explore subjects such as archaeology and local arts and crafts. Curious artefacts, from a mummified crocodile to some 110-year-old chocolate, grab kids' attention.
Don't Go Home Without

Don't Go Home Without

Scottish poet Robert Burns spent his final years in Dumfries, and his white-domed mausoleum is a 5-minute drive from the hotel, at St. Michael's Church. A former watermill now houses the Robert Burns Centre Film Theatre, just 10 minutes' drive away. By day the centre opens its collection of Burns' manuscripts to the public, before screening the latest cinema releases in the evenings.

The village of Eskdalemuir, lying 29 miles from the hotel, is home to the Kagyu Samye Ling Monastery and Tibetan Centre. A number gilded temples and golden Buddha statues surrounded by gardens attract visitors to this peaceful Buddhist retreat. As well as many programmes in mindfulness, meditation and yoga, the centre hosts tai chi and art courses.
