The Suffolk Coast & Heaths are about 20 minutes by car from the hotel. With their windswept, rugged beaches and estuaries and their stunning landscapes, it's easy to see why they've been designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Wander the walking paths or try a spot of water sports, then head to the Butt and Oyster pub for a pint and a locally sourced steak to replenish your strength.

Mary Tudor was proclaimed Queen of England at Framlingham Castle, a 30-minute drive from the hotel. The 800-year-old walls are nearly 11 metres high, and you can walk atop them for impressive views of the surrounding countryside. Travel back in time with a tour of the castle, with its displays of period clothing and weaponry. The lawns inside the castle walls are a great place for a picnic.

The truth is out there at Rendlesham Forest, about a 30-minute drive from the hotel. A UFO purportedly landed here in 1980 – you can hike to its landing spot, read about the event and even view a replica of the flying saucer. There are plenty of walking trails to wander, and lots of activities for kids, including wooden climbing walls, zip-lines and play areas.
