It was built between AD 1638 and 1648 after Shah Jahan decided to move his capital from Agra to the newly planned city of Shahjahanabad. It was designed by the Mughal architect Ustad Ahmad Lahori, who had worked with the Persian architect Ustad Isa Khan of the Taj Mahal fame.
