The former Roman baths in Welwyn are preserved in a steel vault, accessed via a tunnel under the A1(M) motorway, just 20 minutes' drive from the hotel. The bath house is an ancient monument which was once part of a villa. You can check out archaeological artefacts discovered in the local area, plus many fascinating original features, from a raised walkway in the well-preserved bath rooms.

You can explore a hangar full of historic aircraft, tanks and boats at the Imperial War Museum in Duxford, half an hour's drive from the hotel. Skilled craftspeople showcase their restoration work in the workshop, and kids can dress up to discover the history of the airfield in an interactive historical exhibit. Be sure to check the calendar for the dates of the airfield's annual air displays.

If you simply can't pass up a beautiful country estate, visit Hatfield House, 20 minutes' drive from the hotel. The 17th-century Jacobean mansion opens to the public from March to September. You can admire period paintings and furniture in the house itself, and explore the marked trails in the sprawling Great Park to discover flower-filled gardens, ancient oak trees and a working farm.

Conservative MP Boris Johnson called St. Albans "a miniature Britain", and the town, 25 minutes from the hotel by car, has plenty to keep families busy. You can spot medieval wall paintings and climb the tower at 1,000-year-old St. Albans Cathedral, or admire a Roman theatre and mosaics at Verulamium Museum. The town's market dates back hundreds of years and is a great place to pick up a snack.
