Visit the Fuggerei, the world’s oldest social housing project, founded by merchant Jakob Fugger in 1521. The quiet lanes of the walled enclave are lined with ivy-covered yellow houses, one of them now a museum. Each has its own unique bell pull, so residents could identify their home in the dark. The current tenants of the 140 apartments pay a rent of less than €1 per year – plus 3 prayers a day.

Smart Tips
A short walk from the hotel in a former hospital you’ll find a fascinating collection of marionettes. They’re the stars of the Augsburger Puppenkiste theatre, which has been performing since 1948. Characters like Mikesch the Cat and Jim Knopf even became stars on German TV. The puppets are on display in the Kiste museum, and you can see them perform in regularly staged shows.
