The narrow lanes of Augsburg’s beautifully preserved Old Town are lined with boutiques, art galleries and inviting cafés. The Town Hall is a Renaissance masterpiece, famed for its opulent Golden Hall, while St Mary's Cathedral features stained-glass windows from the 11th century. The Schaezlerpalais houses a lavish rococo ballroom and works by artists including Rubens and Tiepolo.

Visit the Fuggerei, the world’s oldest social housing project, founded by merchant Jakob Fugger in 1521. The quiet lanes of the walled enclave are lined with ivy-covered yellow houses, one of them now a museum. Each has its own unique bell pull, so residents could identify their home in the dark. The current tenants of the 140 apartments pay a rent of less than €1 per year – plus 3 prayers a day.

Augsburg loves a party, and whenever you visit there's likely to be a festival in full swing. The Plärrer beer festival takes place in spring and autumn, with funfairs and fireworks. Also held twice a year, the outdoor Dult market specialises in traditional crafts, while the charming Christmas market is one of Germany’s most popular. The city also hosts annual jazz and orchestral music festivals.

A short walk from the hotel in a former hospital you’ll find a fascinating collection of marionettes. They’re the stars of the Augsburger Puppenkiste theatre, which has been performing since 1948. Characters like Mikesch the Cat and Jim Knopf even became stars on German TV. The puppets are on display in the Kiste museum, and you can see them perform in regularly staged shows.
