      Neighbourhoods

      Explore our neighbourhood.

Once a Dutch colony, Flushing has come a long way since its historic roots. Nowadays, it has a lot more in common with Hong Kong than New Amsterdam. Get off the last stop on the 7 Train, and you'll be greeted by a magnificent cacophony of sights, sounds and smells. The Taiwanese immigrants who first opened businesses here decades ago are now joined by newcomers from all over Asia, with glittering high-rises and bustling underground food courts just blocks from Victorian mansions, columned government buildings, and tranquil parks and gardens. Grab a steamed rice roll, slurp an order of soup dumplings, and get your bubble tea to go; there's plenty to see and do in one of the world's largest and fastest-growing Chinatowns.

      Queens Botanical Garden

This tranquil retreat was created for the 1939 World's Fair and still retains aspects of its original mission, with themed gardens promoting global botany and educational opportunities for visitors about environmentalism and sustainability. Sniff your way through the Fragrance Walk and the Herb Garden, or marvel at the beauty of the Cherry Circle.

      Queens Botanical Garden
      Unisphere Corona Park

Built for another World's Fair in 1964, nowadays the Unisphere seems both futuristic and retro. A stainless-steel globe at the center of dancing fountains, it sits in front of the Queens Museum as a symbol of peace and unity. Today it remains a Queens icon — and a great place to take a selfie or cool off in summer.

      Unisphere Corona Park
      Queens Museum

In a one-time World's Fair and United Nations building next to the Unisphere, the Queens Museum shows thought-provoking contemporary art exhibitions. But its main draw is something you won't see anywhere else: a sprawling model of New York City, complete with each and every building, and a surrounding glass walkway so you can view it from above.

      Queens Museum
      Louis Armstrong House Museum

The Corona house where the legendary jazz musician lived with his wife has been preserved exactly as they left it. Daily tours of the cozy, retro rooms, complete with recordings he made of conversations with family and friends, bring this tiny museum to life, while temporary exhibitions illuminate little-known sides of the beloved trumpet player, composer and singer.

      Louis Armstrong House Museum
      Flushing Town Hall

The one-time home of Flushing's government, this 150-year-old building now showcases some of the best cultural happenings the area has to offer. Come here for workshops on drawing and puppetry, jazz concerts and a weekly jam session to honor Queens resident Louis Armstrong, plus dance performances that span the globe.

      Flushing Town Hall
      Kupferberg Center of Arts

This Queens College-run venue has long been a stopover for nationally renowned artists, with Jerry Seinfeld, David Bowie and Patti LaBelle on the list of notable performers. It's also home to arts programs for schoolchildren, rehearsal space for NYC dance companies and plenty of student performances, so buying a ticket here means supporting the city's arts community.

      Kupferberg Center of Arts
      Queens Theatre

On any given week at this Corona Park venue, you may see flamenco, classical Indian dance, a witty retelling of a Shakespearean classic, a colorful children's play, a reading of up-and-coming local authors or a new play about Frida Kahlo. That's because this performing arts space is like a microcosm of the neighborhood: It has something for everybody.

      Queens Theatre
      Willow Interfaith Women's Choir

There's something beautiful about a group of people lifting up their voices in song — even more so when they come from all walks of life, with different languages, religions and ethnicities, but are joined by their love of music. This women's choir represents the diversity of Queens, and one of their performances will be the highlight of your trip.

      Willow Interfaith Women's Choir
      Dumpling Galaxy

If you want a crash-course in dumplings, head to Dumpling Galaxy, a huge outpost of Helen You's beloved underground food stall. The possibilities are endless when it comes to fillings and preparations, so try ordering a variety (leaving room for sweet dessert dumplings, of course).

      Dumpling Galaxy
      Lamb Noodle Soup

The basement food court of the Golden Mall can be overwhelming, so head straight to this homey stall for hand-pulled noodles with succulent lamb in hot broth. It's comfort food for those who like things warm and spicy, and there's a bonus: Since they pull the noodles right in front of you, it's a meal and entertainment in one.

      Lamb Noodle Soup
      Royal Queen

No Flushing visit would be complete without dim sum, and this place is among the best. The huge New World Mall restaurant is open for brunch, so you can celebrate the weekend with a decadent meal of dumplings, shrimp rolls, lotus buns and spare ribs. Once you're done, head to Real KTV, an upscale karaoke club in the same building.

      Royal Queen
      Spot Dessert Bar

With roots in Thailand, this dessert-only restaurant really hits the spot. The playful, sugary menu offers Asian takes on classic sweets, with flavors like miso, matcha, coconut and Thai tea. There's a lot to tempt you here, but the matcha lava cake — a warm chocolate cake filled with green tea ganache — definitely takes the cake.
