      Neighbourhoods

      Explore our neighbourhood.

Meet Bartek Kozina, Coffee Master in Krakow.

Art and culture have always been at the heart of life in Krakow. The city’s poets, artists and scholars were the force behind Poland’s Golden Age, and later Jan Matejko – arguably our greatest painter – lived in the building that became our hotel. His statue stands outside the neighbouring Academy of Fine Arts, and you can still visit the nearby studio where he created his monumental historic works. The old town is now a World Heritage Site, filled with monuments to its former residents, and galleries like the contemporary MOCAK are among the finest in Europe. Named Capital of Culture in 2000, Krakow is experiencing a renewed artistic buzz, and you can explore the new museums and bars of the regenerated historic quarters that have brought a resurgent vigour to the city’s creative life.

      Old Kleparz Market

You'll notice the intoxicating aroma of fresh produce from Old Kleparz market, right opposite our hotel, as soon as you step outside. In business since the 12th century, it's a great place to shop for fruit and vegetables, dairy produce and traditional Polish delicacies, and the stall owners are always willing to let you try before you buy.

      Old Kleparz Market
Rynek Glowny – Krakow's Main Square

A gentle stroll from our hotel, Rynek Glowny – Krakow’s main square – is a magnificent medieval meeting place at the heart of the old town. It's surrounded by grand buildings, none more spectacular than the central Renaissance Cloth Hall, as well as plenty of restaurants with terraces where you can soak up the vibrant atmosphere of the city.

Rynek Glowny – Krakow's Main Square
      Wawel Castle

You can walk in the footsteps of Polish kings at Wawel castle, founded in the 14th century by Casimir III the Great. Today this great symbol of our nation houses a major art museum, and you can explore the magnificent riverside buildings to discover art and artefacts ranging from Italian Renaissance paintings to gold, armour and Ottoman tents.

      Wawel Castle
      Jewish District of Kazimierz

South of the old town, the Jewish district of Kazimierz was neglected during the Soviet era and fell into disrepair. After a recent rebirth, it’s now home to some of Krakow’s coolest bars and restaurants, the place to head for a night out. The past isn't forgotten either – there's also a flourishing cultural scene that honours its tragic history.

      Jewish District of Kazimierz
      Juliusz Slowacki Theatre

You can catch contemporary and classical drama, as well as captivating musical shows, at the Juliusz Slowacki Theatre, a few minutes’ walk from our hotel. Built in 1893, the grand Baroque building was modelled on the great European concert halls of its day, including the Paris Opera. Inside, look out for the frescoes by Austrian artist Anton Tuch.

      Juliusz Slowacki Theatre
      Krakowska Opera House

The city's Opera Krakowska opera house – 15 minutes’ walk from the hotel – is relatively modern, having been founded in 1954. It stages over 200 performances every year, so if you’re looking for a dose of high culture, you can take your pick from international and Polish grand opera, ballet, operettas and even musicals aimed at children.

      Krakowska Opera House
      ICE Krakow Congress Centre

A short taxi ride from the hotel, the multi-purpose ICE Krakow Congress Centre is home to a theatre, exhibition hall and meeting rooms. The venue hosts an eclectic mix of concerts and events, and can seat up to 2,000. If you love jazz you won't want to miss the international summer festival, which attracts big-name artists from around the world.

      ICE Krakow Congress Centre
      TAURON Arena Krakow

If you want to spend the evening with some of the biggest names in showbiz, head for the TAURON Arena Krakow. Shaped like a giant Frisbee, this futuristic building was opened in 2014 as a venue for concerts and major sporting events. Its vast indoor arena has space for 15,000 fans, who come here to see concerts by top global pop and rock artists.

      TAURON Arena Krakow
      Wierzynek Restaurant

The old town’s sophisticated Wierzynek restaurant can trace its origins back to 1364. It was once a regular haunt of the Polish royal family, and its sumptuous interior and fine food make it a favourite among its current national and international clientele. It's renowned for its traditional Polish delicacies – make sure that you try the venison.

      Wierzynek Restaurant
      Szara Restaurant

You can tuck into a mouthwatering array of modern European dishes beneath an impressive vaulted ceiling at Szara, a stylish restaurant on the city's main square. The menu covers everything from a fried breakfast to Dutch mussels, but the house is particularly known for its bouillabaisse style fish soup, as well as delicious rabbit and duck.

      Szara Restaurant
      Old Kleparz Market

If you really want to get to grips with the local cuisine, you can start your voyage of discovery at the Old Kleparz market right outside our door. Graze your way around dozens of food stalls and you'll get to taste a wealth of traditional local foods, including salty precels (pretzel) and regional Krakowska sausages.

      Old Kleparz Market
      Kazimierz‘s Maly Sledz Bar

You can grab a simple, traditional dinner at one of Krakow’s many herring bars. The concept is straightforward: order from the huge range of flavoured herrings, pick a herbal vodka from the menu, and tuck in. Polish dining doesn’t get more old-fashioned, yet today bars such as Kazimierz‘s Maly Sledz are packed with the city's hippest young artists.
