Hotel Indigo Newcastle
Hotel Indigo Newcastle
The Neighbourhood of Firsts.
Hotel Indigo® Newcastle brings the trendsetting spirit of Grainger Town to life with a bold design influenced by its neoclassical architecture. In our guest rooms, the columns and arches of Geordie landmarks are reimagined as eye-catching artworks; rooms with balconies let you absorb the skyline over alfresco drinks. Connect seamlessly to your digital world, or pamper yourself in bathrooms with lush spa products. When out and about, try a ham-filled stotty roll at Grainger Market and wash it down with local ale, perhaps a bottle of Newcastle Brown Ale (or a pint of dog as the locals call it!). Come evening, opt for cocktails or craft beers in our chilled Grainger Lounge or celebrate with gutsy British dishes at Marco Pierre White Steakhouse. On match days you'll find our boutique hotel's city-centre parking a bonus – St. James' Park is a mere stroll away.

Neighbourhoods
Explore our neighbourhood.
Grainger Town has been a hotbed of innovation and invention since the Industrial Revolution. This is where Robert Stephenson built his Rocket locomotive, Joseph Swan switched on the world’s first electric light bulb and Robert Grainger transformed the cityscape with his flamboyant columns, domes and turrets in a startling, whimsical style dubbed ‘Tyneside Classical’.
The passion for excellence that inspired the design of our boutique hotel still burns in the streets around us. You’ll experience it along the Quayside, once lined with coal barges and now a city-centre cultural quarter crackling with creative energy. You can taste it in the lovingly curated menus of independent bars and restaurants and you’ll even see it written on the faces of football fans packed into St. James’ Park.
Our hotel steakhouse is the prodigiously talented chef’s first venture in the North East, specialising in well-loved British classics served with Marco’s special touch. Unwind over an expertly mixed cocktail, then pair a premium steak or succulent roast with wines from a thoughtful list. Book now.
With an idyllic lakeside location in Exhibition Park, Wylam Brewery occupies an art deco palace built for the 1929 North East Coast Exhibition. Its USP is artisan beers and stouts, served alongside mini sharing plates in the brewery’s white-tiled Tap & Kitchen; the cavernous Grand Hall hosts gigs and craft-beer workshops at weekends.
Beloved of barristers and bankers, this ritzy Quayside gastropub is run by local super-chef Terry Laybourne. His award-winning Northumbrian cuisine is complemented by an unusual selection of cask and bottled beers plus a choice of wines by the glass, all served in dining rooms with oak floors or a cosy snug with leather banquettes.
Cal's Own
You’ll be transported to Italy at this funky, bare-walled pizzeria in leafy Jesmond. Family-run Cal’s Own uses only authentic ingredients – mozzarella from sunny Campania and tomatoes grown on the foothills of Vesuvius – on its paper-thin sourdough slices. The wood-fired oven was imported from Naples to guarantee perfect pizza every time.
Angel of the North
Guarding the approach to Newcastle, the soaring, rust-coloured Angel of the North has a wingspan to rival a jumbo jet. This iron beauty towers 20 metres over the rooftops of Gateshead and was designed by British sculptor Antony Gormley as a symbol of future hope as well as a tribute to Tyneside’s once-thriving mining industry.
Once the hub of the city’s coal and ship-building industries, the riverside Quays are now reborn around the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art and the futuristic Sage Gateshead. This chic arts quarter is a district of cool apartments, bars and restaurants with the wacky, tilted Millennium Bridge rearing across the Tyne.
Beamish Museum
Come face to face with the North East’s industrial heritage at open-air Beamish Museum, set in Durham countryside. Here you’ll find pit villages, railway stations and shops lovingly recreated in every accurate detail. Jump on a tram, descend a coal mine or meet Land Girls at a WWII farm as costumed guides entertain and educate you.
Newcastle Castle
Follow in royal footsteps at this stark, stone fortress overlooking the River Tyne, with Roman origins and a medieval keep. Guided tours lead through the castle from dark dungeons to the fortified Black Gate. You’ll be keeping company with the ghosts of Scottish border reivers and Civil War soldiers.
Metro Radio Arena
State-of-the-art lighting, pyrotechnics and music so loud it shakes the soul. These all form the unforgettable experience at Metro Radio Arena, one of the largest concert venues in the North East. Look out for top comedians and mega sporting events as well as massive names in rock, with past gigs from David Bowie, Kylie and Oasis.
Sage Gateshead
A bulbous hulk of glass and steel on the Tyne, Sage Gateshead concert venue is home to the Royal Northern Sinfonia. Its pure acoustics draw music stars to Tyneside from across the globe. Don’t miss a beat between performances; nip down the concrete walkways for a drink at the bar and crafty views over Newcastle’s famous bridges.
Theatre Royal
With an ornate interior swathed in gold leaf and red velvet, the colonnaded Theatre Royal opened in 1837 and stars of the stage have stalked its hallowed boards ever since. Take your pick from 400 performances a year, including West End musicals, ballets, comedy shows and Newcastle’s much-loved annual family pantomime.
The Cluny
What began life as a 19th-century, brick-built mill has morphed into a cult pub and raucous venue. The Cluny hosts a full-on schedule of big-name gigs and boosts upcoming artists, allowing you to tap into Newcastle’s thumping music scene at grassroots. Get there early for pie of the day and soul food po’boys as the kitchen closes at 9pm.
