We stay in Chicago a lot both for work and for fun. This was our first time at IC on the Mile. We walked almost 8.5 miles on Sunday and never really crossed the same path. the location is very central to everywhere around the Mile.

I stay at many hotels in the Chicago area for work and this one was okay, but certainly not the best. The rooms were smaller than most in the Chicago area in this category (4 star). It was certainly clean, but there are many other hotels that have larger rooms. If you are in town for vacation, it is located in a great location (Michican Ave) and the service was great. I love the instant service button on the phone! Anything I requested on this line was taken care of quickly and to my satisfaction.

The room was nice, that was the nicest part of our experience. I booked the hotel online which was supposed to include a valet package which as soon as I booked I called and the lady on the phone stated that valet was for sure included. Then of course I get to the hotel and they know of such a deal where valet is included so then I called the number that I called to begin with and this time there was no record of that package. Finally after the 3rd time of the front desk attendant going back and talking to the manager, he finally comes out. After 45 minutes we finally got checked in get up to the room and they put us in a 2 double room not the king room that I paid for. So I get to go back down to the front desk and request another room. But the room was nice and clean.

We stayed here because our friends were having a wedding reception. We love the hotel. The process of staying there was pretty difficult. I made my original reservation for April 11-12. A week before, i called to see if we might add an additional night. I spoke with a very helpful person who added the night, gave me a second confirmation number, and said she was "linking our confirmation numbers" so that we wouldn't have to move rooms.
When we checked in on 4/10 (the added night), they didn't seem to have any record of my request. Nonetheless, the staff member was helpful and upgraded our room to a King suite, which was great. She also said she had us down for two nights and we wouldn't have to move rooms.
The following morning, we had a checkout folio under our door. I remember receiving a text to let the hotel know if we needed anything, so I texted my concern that they thought we were checking out. Received a note back that a staff member would be in touch with us. Never heard another thing.
Later that afternoon, we went up to check out the pool. When we returned, an hour before we needed to be downstairs at the wedding reception, none of our room keys worked. My husband went downstairs and 20 minutes later (now with just 40 minutes to get 4 of us ready for the reception) returned with new keys - saying, they had no record of us and thought we had checked out! He had to put the second night on a different credit card and they didn't include that we were IHG Rewards members.
I again texted the number I was given sharing my frustration with being locked out of our room (with all our things inside) - no response. We loved the hotel but the customer care on this particular visit was really appalling.

I always loved the grandeur of this property. The "clubby" and elegant feel from its history. My room was in the "historic tower" and I am not sure what was left of any history, since my room was just renovated into ALL grey stark minimalist style. The room literally had a white comforter, no art work, desk and a window with a grey shade- no drapery at all and a TV that was more like a jumbotron at a stadium (too large to watch from my bet which was only several feet away). This used to be the HISTORIC tower- oh well.
I told the front desk how disappointed I was and they said it was just renovated and I stated, "renovated into a DORM room" and certainly not what I had come to expect from a luxury hotel like Intercontinental. They were going to call back and never did.
Lastly, I should state that I am writing because I am disappointed and want them to know that they should get a new decorator to "spruce up" those rooms unless Intercontinental wants to loose their former brand presence. In addition, the hotel USED to have a lovely lobby in the historic building with lounge chair seating and cocktails . Well, there is NO longer a lobby at all, it is now 2 restaurants and a Starbucks. I guess that is progress.

The Chicago InterContinental is not what it used to be. If you're looking for an elegant experience and the majestic beauty of one of the grand hotels, this isn't it anymore. If you're looking for dull, generic, sports bar atmosphere, it greets you at the front door. Our room was grey and dull, and the refrigerator had no real space for any personal items. A couple of yogurt containers maybe. If you don't care about atmosphere, this is your hotel. I won't stay here again. I do want to end on a positive note because there's nothing they can do to bring the historic elements back. The live camera panorama of Michigan Ave behind the check in area fed by a camera out front is interesting. If you're looking for good customer service from staff, you will get it.
