My family's stay at the Holiday Inn in Almaty was pleasant: I was offered a free bottle of champagne, and the staff was very professional at addressing all my inquiries.

The hotel in Almaty is modern and the staff is very pleasant but beware the internet. I have never had so many problems with internet service as I have had in this location. It was, to put it mildly, completely and utterly frustrating. I needed to have a staff member in my room almost every evening to help log onto the internet. The internet was spotty, troublesome to connect to and has no bandwidth to speak of. If you do business with the internet while abroad, avoid this location.
The food was good but very pricey as well as the drinks for this area. A $17.00 ceasar salad (3200 KZT) is expected in some locations but not here. This hotel is also a little off the beaten path and if you do not have transportation, you will need to utilize a taxi service.
All in all, I did not have a bad experience here but I think that the hotel has a little growing to do as far as the international market is concerned. Their services are not equal to their prices.
If you are an IHG member, I suggest the Intercontinental as a better alternative.

Front desk staff could have done better. I had problems with wifi connection and an inroom modem was provided. This was handled professionally. But on the other hand, they refused to call a city taxi for me for airport transportation. Instead I had to use their own airport transportation that was about twice the price of the city taxi.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by SanFranciscoD good hotel overall
The hotel was clean and comfortable. A breakfast in the morning was included with the room rate and it was quite good. The breakfast was large compared to other hotels in Almaty. The room was noisy when I arrived and there was a lot of traffic noise. I found the window was not completely closed and I closed it, only to find out why it was left open in the first place. The room is hot, and the thermostat didn't work. I turned off the thermostat and the heat didn't turn off, so the hotel is like the government buildings in Kazakhstan where the government turns on the heat in the winter and you'll get whatever you get. I woke up in the middle of the night because I was sweating so much, and had to open the window to let the room cool down to a tolerable temperature so I can go back to sleep. I'll try this hotel again, but if the heat in another room was not adjustable, I'll forego this hotel in the future.

Your receptionist people need a total training on your system. They have no experience and understanding of your job and needed qualities of their job.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 Great service, great hotel.
I stayed here during a conference visit--third time at this hotel. Staff is extremely service-oriented and all small issues (from room service miscommunications to slow wifi) were dealt with promptly. They gave me a network cable and free high-speed internet login when the wifi signal did not reach my room.
Watch out for the high-priced room service and laundry--but they did get my clothes clean the same day.
P.S. The other conference attendees stayed in a local hotel downtown and were very dissatisfied with their rooms--the Holiday Inn, other than a few strange idiosyncrasies, is definitely up to the Western standards.
