Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Well worth a stay for comfort, service and access to the region We drive past the Scotch Corner every time we travel south on our holidays. What a surprise it was to actually stay here and experience what it has to offer. Don't be put off by the stark exterior as the welcome and quality experience inside are value for money and above what might be expected. Friendly staff, relaxing and well-maintained surroundings helped to create a happy atmosphere where all other guests we saw appeared to be enjoying their time there as much as we did. August 19, 2014

Doors in corridor rather noisy and a squeaky floor upstairs woke me earlier than I had hoped. Great to have complimentary use of the adjacent pool and gym. Great value for money. Entrance and bar a bit dingy and tired-looking - could do with brightening up. Also, while bar staff were friendly and polite, service was very slow - possibly not enough staff on duty? Didn't affect overall stay, which was very pleasant, comfortable and would definitely go again. August 17, 2014

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Superb accessible facilities As a disabled guest, I was highly impressed by the accessible facilities supplied. The wet room was extremely large, with both an overhead shower and hand-held one. There were plenty of grab rails, and a chair for sitting on under the shower. I use crutches permanently, but had I been in a wheelchair, there was ample room to move around in one. The one thing I would have loved to have had was an electric adjustable bed - I tend to seize up overnight, and to be able to gradually sit up would have been extremely beneficial. All in all though top marks to Holiday Inn for really thinking through what facilities a disabled person requires. August 15, 2014

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Best in hotel stay in years Absolutely faultless in every way. Everything just worked like clockwork. We were looking for a hotel to accommodate myself / my wife plus my two elderly and rather frail parents in order to visit friends in Barnard Castle. We booked fairly closely to our date and the hotel were able to meet our needs for an accessible room for my folks which was next door to our own. The check in staff were very efficient and made sure that my folks didn't have to wait around too long. As we had spent 5 hours on the road we rested up before heading to the in- house restaurant for a great meal at great value. Once again the staff were very attentive and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The first nights sleep was very comfortable and we awoke refreshed for the day ahead. Breakfast was excellent - plenty of choice despite the fact that the room was quote busy, plus smiling staff - just the right start to the day. We visited with our friends and returned to the hotel late afternoon where my wife and I used the pool and sauna while my folks rested up. Everything was clean and, once again, the staff were very friendly asking how we had enjoyed the day and providing pointers about the local area. After an early nightcap we retired for another night's restful sleep. Another great breakfast on our last day then we asked for a checkout extension in order not to have to hurry my folks. No problem. All in all our stay was 5 star. Thank you Holiday Inn for a great experience. We will default to HI for our next family weekend soon. August 12, 2014

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Very enjoyable stay; excellent customer service We have stayed at many Holiday Inns, previously, and this one didn't necessarily inspire confidence from the outside: just off a roundabout off the A1. However, as soon as we arrived at reception, the experience picked up. Every member of staff, starting with the receptionist, was outstanding, and seemed genuinely concerned with our having a good stay. We had booked an executive room (the only twin room available when we booked), and this was huge, well appointed, and well equipped. Everything worked, and the beds were extremely comfortable. Situated well away from the road, albeit with a view of the inside workings of the hotel, the room was very quiet, with no road noise from the nearby A1. We ate in the Italian restaurant that night, and enjoyed a wonderful meal. Breakfast, the next morning, was fine, although there was a significant wait at the hot breakfast counter where several items seemed to run out at the same time, and seemed to take a long time to arrive. However, this notwithstanding, the breakfast was much enjoyed. The inside of the hotel is full of lovely Art Deco features, and the signage matches this, too. Although there are many signs of Holiday Inn corporate image, even this is replaced by the Art Deco signage. If in the area, again, I wouldn't hesitate to stay here, and cannot commend the staff highly enough. August 5, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent hotel with very friendly staff I stay at this hotel on a regular basis and I have never been disappointed. The rooms are very modern and always clean. The beds are very comfortable. You get complimentary water and orange juice in the fridge and a choc bar and there are tea making facilities. There is an excellent pizza restaurant in the hotel which also serves excellent pastas and you can also eat old favourites such as fish and chips in the bar area. The staff here are very helpful and friendly. There are also gym facilities available in the health club but I have never had time to use them. All in all excellent. Mr Solomon August 2, 2014

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Getting an upgrade improved the standards Booked this hotel for the second year in succession as last year we had good service albeit it was the hottest summer that year. This year we were offered an upgrade from a Standard room to a Suite for a minor additional cost which we were glad we took up. As we were stopping off on our way to Scotland, we really enjoyed the upgrade with its extra facilities - the Queen size bed was worth it. The staff were courteous as usual and the restaurant facilities were also as good. We originally booked without the evening meal facilities but the hotel allowed us to change our mind at the time of checking in which helped matters. Would I recommend this Hotel to anyone else? Yes, without hesitation to the point that we will book again when next on our way to Scotland. July 28, 2014

The rooms and other facilities set an excellent standard and there was little noise despite the hotel's being sited on a very busy motorway junction. We certainly intend to use it in the future. The carpark is reminiscent of an old lorry park on the long journey north to Scotland. But walk inside and you find a well designed, comfy and clean hotel (2014). the staff were extremely friendly, one particular waiter on the breakfast service should be awarded employee of the year for his helpful, polite, fun and courteous service. The rooms are modern in fit out and very comfy, the front I suspect is a little noisy, my room at the back was perfectly peaceful (207). I would recommend it, but its not the cheapest in the area by a long way, and I can still not believe WiFi isn't included as standard. July 4, 2014

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Noisy Stay Booked two rooms well in advance for me and my dad. Was wedding on at same time so noise throughout the night and people running up and down corridors banging doors. Didn't get much sleep. Complained to the desk staff and they just said they usually put non wedding guests on other side of the hotel, obviously they never bothered with us. Complained online but didn't really get any joy just an apology and hope you enjoy your next stay. Well there won't be a next stay after this experience. My bed was uncomfortable and lumpy my dads bed was fine he said. The room was clean and nice bathroom. Had food from the bar and a few drinks and were left with our dirty plates and glasses piling up for 3 hours before anyone cleared the table. Not a good stay and terrible value for money. The receptionist was rude when this was queried saying "you should know that this number of requests is common if you have stayed in hotels before. An extra night's accommodation was booked in person but on checking in, there was no record of the booking. The room at the front of the hotel was subject to significant road noise. On the plus side the hotel and room were clean and well appointed and up to and beyond some of the Holiday Inns in which I have stayed. June 29, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by NICE HOTEL. Quality hotel with nice helpful staff and very good food. Bedrooms are clean and well presented. We found that when we go back we will need to book a king size bed due to standard room beds being too small. Only gripe we had. Food is good in the lounge with a decent choice. Breakfast gives a choice to suite every need. If you leave hungry then you can only blame yourself. Pity about the bed issue, but will go back. June 18, 2014

Clean modern with a nice bar area, comfortable rooms with complimentary water and juice in the fridge. My only issue was the heating came on during the night and I couldn't get it to go off again - probably easy to do but not in the middle of the night. So too hot in the room. Thank goodness for the water in the fridge though! An excellent place to stop over on a North/South journey - or South/North for that matter. i will happily stay here again. June 16, 2014

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great Hotel. Actually, apart from a few issues including poor mattress, minor cleanliness and maintenance issues, it was a fantastic hotel with good food and environment. We would stay again, but make sure we understood what events were going on and where our room was situated compared to the event. Also, although I could get my iPhone etc to connect to the wireless network, Macbook was very reluctant. June 11, 2014
