I stayed with my family at the Holiday Inn Southend last Saturday evening. Mixed feelings about the stay although overall OK. It was the details that let it down.
Firstly, Reception meeting and greeting was excellent. I believe it was the Duty or Front of House Manager that checked us in. He was very welcoming, acknowledged that I was a member of the IHG Club and provided useful information.
We booked two Executive Rooms on a Dinner, Bed and Breakfast rate. Had wanted to book the premier rooms which have a separate seating area with a sofa but the hotel only has four of these and they were all booked. The rooms were clean, well equipped and had great views of the airport runway (as requested). In fact the hotel had met all our requests, high room, airport view and next to each other. The beds were really comfortable, and there was a choice of hard or soft pillows.
So far, so good. Where things weren't so good was the restaurant named 1935. It was a few small things such as no bread with the starter. When I asked for this, I was given a supermarket white slice which had already been spread with margarine! The pudding was Eton Mess, but didn't actually have any fruit with it, only syrup. The set menu was very limited, despite costing £25 and added a supplement of £5 for steak. Breakfast was OK - but the sausages were really fatty, and anything bespoke was extra.
Another issue was that there was only one set of towels per room and one robe. We had to request extra as there were two people in each room!
Upon checkout, the bill wasn't correct. Despite being assured in the restaurant that we had £100 credit under the DBB arrangement between us, they had calculated this incorrectly and the bill was £35 over! This was rectified, but there was a delay and this mean't missing the once every 30 minute train to London - not good.
It would be nice to know that these things would be addressed as it would influence us staying again.

Stayed for 2 nights with my wife whilst visiting relatives, ideal location, no noise from the airport and great views. Breakfast was good with views over the surrounding area and airfield including the legendary Vulcan.
Also very near the train station if needed.
Hotel is new so it is clean and comfortable. Only complaint is the room lighting as we found it strange to only have one bedside light set-up. Even worse it was on my wife's side!!
Staff were friendly and efficient.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Endeavour90 Excellent Business or Leisure Hotel
This was my third stay at the Holiday Inn Southend and it was up to the expected high standards. I was pleased that the reception staff remembered me from previous visits but also found that all the staff were as attentive, helpful and openly welcoming.
The rooms are spacious and comfortable and the restaurant menu is varied but always good quality.
If you are flying/going on holiday this hotel is a good choice - being close to Southend Train Station and right beside Southend Airport, but don't worry, although you can watch the planes take off and land from the comfort of the Bar or Restaurant, the sound insulation is perfect and you won't be disturbed by the noise.

After an initial hic-cup regarding our booking which was overcome by the excellent reception and duty managerial staff our stay went from strength to strength.
After a minor issue with our first room which was totally out of the control of the hotel we were re-allocated for the remainder of our four night stay after the first night. The room to which we were re-allocated was spacious and extremely comfortable with the most stunning of uninterrupted views across Southend Airports airfield.
The quality of the mattress afforded us the best four nights sleep we had for months.
I can do nothing but recommend this bright airy hotel which is designed to make the very best of it location and recommend anyone visiting to request an airfield side room on the fourth floor - fantastic.

Great family room, comfortable and spacious.
We had to leave at 4.30 am, but despite that we were able to have breakfast ( although not the full cooked version available slightly later)
We were able to have coffee, juice, toast and cereal which set us up nicely for our flight.
