LOCAL CULTURE

Hoi An

Hoi An is Vietnam’s most charming and atmospheric town, an old port city that has remained remarkably well preserved for hundreds of years. A stroll through the city’s lantern-lit old town, along winding lanes, temples and Chinese shophouses is a romantic journey to the past. Hoi An (then called Lam Ap Pho) was the main trading port of the Cham Empire from the 2nd to the 14th centuries. The city rose to prominence again in the 16th century under the Nguyen Lords and became a major economic center. Chinese, Japanese and traders from Europe all played a role in the city’s development, giving it a uniquely international flavor. Today, Hoi An’s historic charm coexists with abundant shopping and chic modern restaurants, making it a top tourist destination and a culinary haven.

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Everything is good except the staff's behaviour When I checked out, the receptionist required my credit card to make the payment. Unfortunately I put the card in the luggage and I was in a rush so I decided to open my luggage immediately to get my card. I perceived that I should do it as quickly as possible because the lobby is a public space, and I just opened a small part of the suitcase enough to put the hand in. However, there was a guy (the name card saying the Director of Guest Services) appearing and talked to us in a very impolite voice tone: "How come you can do it here? It's unacceptable here! It's ridiculous of you to do it in such a public place!". Right, at a 6 star resort, I wished I had been treated more politely although it was my fault or not. Everything was good until the check-out which made us think we paid money for a better stay but finally receiving unexpectedly disappointing treatment.. July 2, 2015
