Every year since 1930, residents of Arkansas, Tennessee, and Mississippi have gathered in nearby Lepanto, Arkansas, to participate in or witness the Terrapin Derby. This site was a 15-acre palisaded village and farming-based civilization that once thrived on the Mississippi River between approximately 1400 and 1650 in what is now Mississippi County.
