Every year since 1930, residents of Arkansas, Tennessee, and Mississippi have gathered in nearby Lepanto, Arkansas, to participate in or witness the Terrapin Derby. But the highlight is the infamous turtle race, where turtles compete on a sixty-foot track toward a finish line where they are awarded slices of watermelon.

A short drive from our hotel, Hampson Archeological Museum State Park showcases a nationally renowned collection from the Nodena site. This site was a 15-acre palisaded village and farming-based civilization that once thrived on the Mississippi River between approximately 1400 and 1650 in what is now Mississippi County.
