A short drive from our hotel and just minutes from downtown Memphis, Shelby Farms Park is one of the largest urban parks in the country and offers hiking trails, wetlands, a dog park, water activities, an eatery, and a gift shop. Five times the size of New York City’s Central Park, Shelby Farms Park is a non-profit organization and a protected park with a unique bison herd. Also known as Osceola Graveyard, Violet Cemetery predates the city, county, and even Arkansas statehood. It is Osceola’s oldest graveyard, dating as far back as 1831. This historical burial site is the final resting place for a broad range of early settlers, war veterans, and founding fathers from the eastern region of Mississippi County. Every year since 1930, residents of Arkansas, Tennessee, and Mississippi have gathered in nearby Lepanto, Arkansas, to participate in or witness the Terrapin Derby. A festival held each October, it includes a 5K run, music, food, crafts, and even a beauty pageant. But the highlight is the infamous turtle race, where turtles compete on a sixty-foot track toward a finish line where they are awarded slices of watermelon.

A short drive from our hotel, Hampson Archeological Museum State Park showcases a nationally renowned collection from the Nodena site. This site was a 15-acre palisaded village and farming-based civilization that once thrived on the Mississippi River between approximately 1400 and 1650 in what is now Mississippi County.
