Less than a mile from the hotel, the opulent Royal Pavilion is a unique mixture of Regency grandeur and Chinese and Indian influences. Originally a seaside pad for George IV, today it houses a collection of Regency furniture, silver and artworks. The meticulously restored Royal Pavilion Tearoom on the top floor, with its balcony overlooking the gardens, is a perfect spot for tea and scones.

A short stroll along the seafront takes you from the hotel to iconic Brighton Pier. There are rides for kids of all ages, from the sedate carousel to the latest adrenaline-pumping thrills. You can find restaurants, bars and stalls offering everything from whelks to sticky Brighton rock. A few steps from the pier, SEA LIFE Brighton aquarium offers fascinating insights into life below the waves.

Brighton is a prime offbeat shopping destination. The Lanes, North Laine and London Road are crammed with independent shops offering design, quirky fashion and gifts. There are markets with everything from gourmet eats to bric-a-brac. The covered Open Market focuses on local organic produce, while Brighton Flea Market and Snooper's Paradise have antiques, handicrafts and vintage clothes.

A bike ride is great way to take in Brighton's coastline while filling your lungs with fresh sea air. Head east toward the chalk cliffs of Saltdean or west along Hove's esplanade to Shoreham Port. Altogether it's a flat nine-mile cycle path ride. There are plenty of picturesque seaside picnic spots along the way – staff at the hotel can point you to the best delis as well as bicycle hire shops.
