For unbeatable views of windswept moorlands, drive to the edge of the Forest of Bowland, just 10 minutes from the hotel. Be sure to wear sturdy walking shoes for traversing bogs, marshes and gritstone fells en route to Clougha Pike, where natural sculpture artist Andy Goldsworthy has created three cairns with oval cut-outs. You can enjoy sweeping panoramas from the top of nearby Grit Fell.

A 45-minute drive from the hotel, the seaside town of Blackpool is known for its annual Blackpool Illuminations festival, when thousands of lights shine along the promenade, from September to November. If you miss it, try Illuminasia, a huge, indoor exhibit of Chinese lantern-inspired sculptures, or take your kids to the Pleasure Beach amusement park for roller coasters and family rides.

Half an hour's drive from the hotel, the Lakeland Motor Museum displays thousands of motor vehicles, including automobiles, motorcycles and even motorboats. There are exhibitions tracing the history of motoring in the Lake District, as well as auto memorabilia, driving outfits and a charming recreation of a 1920s garage. The eco-friendly museum also has an exhibit on climate change.

The Ullswater Steamers fleet comprises five heritage boats, including a couple of colourful vessels dating from the 19th century, that cruise Ullswater Lake year-round. You can board at Glenridding pier, under an hour’s drive from the hotel, before sailing the length of the lake. The surrounding mountain scenery features some of the area’s highest peaks, including Helvellyn.
