Lübeck has several interesting house museums belonging to Nobel Prize winners. Start with a visit to Willy Brandt House, a memorial to the notable politician and federal chancellor. Günter Grass House, dedicated to the acclaimed German author, is just around the corner. Round off your tour with a visit to Buddenbrooks House, which celebrates the work of the great novelist, Thomas Mann.

Lübeck is famous for its marzipan, and there's no better spot to sample it than the Marzipan Salon at Café Niederegger in the heart of the city. Take the kids to try the chocolate-covered, almond-based confection, which is made according to a secret recipe. Café Niederegger also has a seaside outlet in Travemünde, a short drive away, so you can opt to hit the beach before calling in for dessert.

There's no way to miss the iconic Holstentor, the city's grand medieval gate. Making for an imposing sight, the red-brick gate is defined by its 2 huge towers with black conical roofs, guarded by twin cannons. Head inside to the Museum Holstentor, where exhibits include a miniature model of the Hanseatic city and ancient torture objects. The gate is just a six-minute drive from the hotel.

When visiting the towering St. Mary's Church (Marienkirche) in the city centre, walk around the side to discover a whimsical devil statue. Next to it is a plaque recounting the folk tale attached to this bronze sculpture, created in the late 1990s. Afterwards, explore the Old Town to discover 4 more spired churches, including Lübeck Cathedral with its 15th-century triumphal cross.
