Local Area

EXPLORE Dusseldorf

Don't Go Home Without

Explore the narrow streets of the Altstadt, home to centuries-old churches and some of the city’s most notable museums. The Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen’s collection includes works by international modern-art luminaries as well as alumni of the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, including Gerhard Richter and Joseph Beuys. After sightseeing, have a drink in one of hundreds of bars located in the area.

Must See

A 10-minute drive from the hotel, the Kaiserwerth district is home to the atmospheric ruins of the Kaiserpfalz on the banks of the Rhine. The site of a 10th-century royal palace, it was rebuilt by Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa a couple centuries later. From April through October, you can cruise to the area by boat, with a drink in hand, from the riverside promenade in Dusseldorf city centre.

Must Do

Königsallee, Dusseldorf’s poshest shopping street, is also an official historic landmark. Developed in the early 19th century, the grand boulevard is graced by a central moat lined with chestnut trees. Window-shop the luxe stores, such as Cartier and Louis Vuitton, plus a few more affordable retailers. When you need a break, stop for coffee at an outdoor café and watch the fashionable passers by.

Local Tips

Be sure to sample the local Altbier at one of the Altstadt’s breweries, some of which date from the 19th century and serve hearty traditional fare to accompany the beer. If you’re planning to use public transport to see a few sights, the DüsseldorfCard is fantastic value. It includes fares within the city and free or discounted entry to many museums and attractions for between 1 and 4 days.
