In 1567, King James VI of Scotland was crowned at Holy Rude church, 10 minutes' drive from the hotel. Look out for the medieval timber roof in the nave, held together only by oak pegs, and the fine, colourful stained glass windows. While you're there, walk over to Argyll's Lodging, a few minutes' away, an elegant, lavishly decorated Renaissance townhouse with grand dining and drawing rooms.
You can take in historic portraits, paintings of the local countryside and photographs tracing the history of the city at Stirling Smith Art Gallery and Museum, less than a mile from the hotel. Keep your eye out for some of the more unusual items in the collection, including a 16th-century curling stone and a 500-year-old football, found lodged in the roof of Stirling Castle in the 1970s.
The family friendly Springkerse View is just yards from the Holiday Inn Express Stirling hotel and offers a warm welcome and varied menu featuring steaks, pasta, burgers and more. Children can work up an appetite in the Playzone.

Don't Go Home Without
You can't visit Stirling without checking out Stirling Castle, less than three miles from the hotel. Guided tours are free. You can explore the carefully restored 16th-century Royal Palace and the impressive Great Hall, or trace the history of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders at their Regimental Museum. Follow the Wall Walk for great views of the castle gardens and surrounding parkland.
Fourteenth-century Doune Castle, 20 minutes' drive from the hotel, was a location for TVs "Game of Thrones" and the movie "Monty Python and the Holy Grail". You can take an audio tour narrated by Monty Python's Terry Jones, explore the impressive Great Hall, or admire the view of Ben Lomond from the battlements. If you have energetic kids, there's a nature trail in the grounds too.
