If antiquities are your thing, drive 25 minutes west to Castle Combe. This charming village dates to medieval England and was the setting of 1967's "Doctor Dolittle". At Castle Combe's south end you can walk through St. Andrew's Church, which dates to the 1200s and includes a monument to a Norman knight. You can cap off your day with an elegant dinner at the Michelin-starred Bybrook Restaurant.

Swindon, once the site of a major repair works for Britain's Great Western Railway, is a railroad buff's delight. The Swindon Steam Railway Museum brings the area's railway history to life via interactive exhibits, videos and a wealth of locomotives, plus tours by ex-railway employees. If you want a complete change of pace, the McArthur Glen Designer Outlet Village is next door.

Nearby Cirencester was the site of the second-century Roman city of Corinium Dobunnorum. Cirencester's Corinium Museum is just 25 minutes' drive from the hotel and houses Roman antiquities, as well as objects from the Neolithic Age through the Victorian period. The museum contains an excellent array of Roman mosaics, but most displays are objects representing everyday life during Roman England.

Smart Tips

Looking for a place to stretch your legs or go for a bike ride? Head to the 275-acre Lydiard Park, about a mile from the hotel. You can go for a run along the paths or wander through the expansive staterooms of the restored Lydiard House, which dates to Elizabethan times. The walled Georgian garden contains a variety of flowering plants and fruit trees, and visitors can purchase heirloom stock.
