The Vandalia Lake is a 660-acre lake with 12 miles of shoreline, located four miles northwest of Vandalia on Illinois Route 185 with an entrance to the marina, boat dock, campground, and beach. The marina has boater's licenses available, plus gasoline, snacks, fishing supplies, and bait. Just a short drive from the hotel.

Fayette County needed a museum so in 1972 the 1867 Presbyterian Church building located on Main Street behind the Old State Capitol on Gallatin Street was purchased by Historical Vandalia, Inc, for the Fayette County Museum. It opened in 1979. The lower level has been developed with much Lincoln history on the years he was in Vandalia.

The Vandalia State House, built in 1836, is the fourth capitol building of Illinois. It is also the oldest capitol building in Illinois to survive, as the first, second, and third capitol buildings have all disappeared. The brick Federal-style statehouse has been operated by the state of Illinois as a monument of Illinois pioneer years since 1933.
