Wollaton Hall, four miles from the hotel, is a 16th-century mansion that's home to Nottingham's Natural History Museum. You can tour the building, then check out ploughing equipment, Brough motorbikes and a large Basford beam engine from 1858 at the Nottingham Industrial Museum, housed in the outbuildings. Or just relax, let the kids run around and enjoy a picnic in the surrounding deer park.

Less than a mile from the hotel, Ye Olde Trip To Jerusalem dates from the 12th century and claims to be England's oldest pub. Take a seat by the fire in one of its cave-like rooms to enjoy a pint of locally brewed ale. Another contender for oldest pub might be Ye Olde Salutation Inn, 20 minutes' stroll away. If you fancy a livelier evening, it's one of Nottingham's most popular rock music venues.

You can descend into the underground City of Caves from the intu Broadmarsh shopping centre, four minutes' drive from the hotel. Book a guided tour of the sandstone complex, or explore independently with an audio guide. You'll see the site of a medieval tannery and the remains of Drury Hill, a 19th-century slum. Head to the Anderson Shelter to see how people used the caves during World War II.

The legend of Robin Hood and his Merry Men is closely linked to Nottingham. You can meet the man himself on the Robin Hood Town Tour, where a costumed guide leads you past landmarks associated with the outlaw and recounts tales from the city's history. Visit Sherwood Forest, an hour's drive away, to get some fresh air and see if you can find the Major Oak, one of Robin Hood's favourite hideouts.
